Does this thread need a "part 1"?

RUMOURS DU JOUR

Talk among NHL GMs is that Atlanta might be willing to make a huge deal before the trade deadline. W Ilya Kovalchuk, 25, is a year away from unrestricted free agency and has another season left on his contract at $7.5 million, but the whisper among executives is he might become available. It would be a tough pill for Atlanta to swallow, but Kovalchuk certainly wouldn't be the first franchise player to be dealt. Hello, Joe Thornton? .

I think they could get Theodore for Ilya this time around.

Higgins, Pacioretty, Tanguay, Latendresse, Kovalchuck, Kovalev Not sure about you guys but to me that looks like quite a good group of wingers!
I'd rather not use the Leafs philosophy of trading away my entire future for one guy... thanks.

That would be nice but no way is Atlanta trading him. I think, we can only get him via free agency and he is still pretty young. Atlanta will have to build around him but it's not there yet for them, they need better defence and they drafted a horse on defence in Zach Bogosian. They are a few years away but Kovalchuk might try to change of team in a few years. If we trade for him, we better be ready to give atleast 2 key players on our team and some prospects.

Fixed for you....

Stories about the habs = hits....

rumored trades between Atlanta and Phoenix just don't do the same thing.

It's pretty clear to me that members of the media, well aware of the Iginla-Nieuwedyk trade that Gainey made years ago to solidify his team for a cup run, see a similar situation forming in Montreal and are trying to guess which guy Gainey is going after.

That way, as soon as (if) Gainey makes a deal...they get to play the "I told you so" card.

I wonder what Atlanta is looking for in return? Young prospects and picks or NHL ready young players, like Higgins and Andrei Kostitsyn.

I hate to break up the brothers but you have to give something to get something.

Andrei Kostitsyn or Guillaume Latendresse
Higgins
PK Subban
1st in 2010

New Lines:

Kovalchuk Plekanec Kovalev
Tanguay Koivu Latendresse or Andrei Kostitsyn
Kostopoulos Lang S. Kostitsyn

Doesn't Kovalchuk mess up without the puck a lot? Isn't this, like Gaborik, another case of sniper with no real defensive upside? We're a two way team now. We're not going to pick up a one way player, unless that one way is defence.

People on this board have a hard time changing their mind on players

Ribeiro is a bum...

Latendresse is fat and slow...

Lapierre is no-good at face-offs

I don't think anyone really felt that. It's more that Lapierre plays better on the wing. It opens him up to do the things he is good at. However, his exceptional face off work this season has earned him the fourth line center position, wheras it hadn't in the past. Kyle Chipchura still has a future as a center on the Canadiens, but his best bet now would be to learn to play the wing until next season (When I doubt we'll have a depth at center like we do and will go with Lapierre on the third line).

Don Waddell: "Hi Bob, this is Don Waddell. Listen, we're depleted on d, what would it take to acquire Ryan O'Byrne?"
Bob (remembering the Hossa fiasco): "Kovalchuk"
Don Waddell: "Ha, ha, seriously Bob"
Bob: CLICK

If they would trade Kovalchuk, they might as well close down the team.

It would be reminiscent of the Expos trading Vladimir Guerrero.
