Kovalev, Tanguay and Koivu..what if you could only choose 2?

I REALLY hope that we can re-sign all 3 players.

But let's just say that we can only sign 2. Who do you guys pick?

For me it's a very tough decision.

Kovalev is the most talented player we've had in a long time and pretty much can decide the flow of the game if he wants to. Every single time he touches the puck something can happen. That's the beauty of having Kovy on our side.

Tanguay is the youngest of the 3 and has been pretty impressive so far. Great playmaker that can make others around him better. I expect 80 points from him this season.

Koivu..captain K. Playoff warrior and is all heart and soul. I can't picture him playing for any other team.

I really don't want to lose any of them.

But what if you HAD to pick only 2?

I have to think about it, but I will come back with my answer. Too damn hard lol

Like I said earlier today, if Gainey doesn't make any major move this season, I'm pretty sure that they will all be re-sign.

That said, if he trades for a guy like Kovalchuk or Gaborik, one of them will probably play for another team next year.

Saku is the captain and I can't see him getting/asking a raise. I would keep him.

Since Tanguay is younger and that he fits the style of play of the Habs incredibly well, I would take him over Kovalev.

Since I really think that Gainey will make a major move, there will be tough decisions in the summer IMO.

Let me put it this way

its not what if you can only choose 2, ...its...you ONLY CAN choose 2...

the real problem is..

koivu has to take "hometown" discount... or else..

Kovalev is 36.. (this is the same problem manny ramirez is facing btw)

tanguay is making 5.25, and by the looks of it.. (while i am THRILLED).. hes puttin up 6 million dollar points...

what i WANT? to sign all 3....at reasonable prices...

What i think will happen? koivu and tanguay resign ... because sergei is just waiting to take his spot..ACHING to take his spot...

what will probably happen? tanguay will ask for too much money, and gainey might actually just resign kovy and koivu...

who knows

I really don't think it's something that needs to be decided right now. Lots of season left to play out and it's a pretty big decision.

Tanguay is the best of the 3. So, I pick him. I also select Koivu because he's the captain of the team and this season, so far, he has played very well and even avoided the penalty box.

Of course, if we can, I would also like to see Kovy staying.

If Bob wants to keep all 3 of them there are other possibilities to lose some salary. Bob will do whatever he can to keep the best team possible for next year. Also we are a winning team so the guys might take discounts to stay on board(that and they can also make some money on the side with advertising, etc that they probably wont in most markets)

Koivu will stay for around $4M per.

Kovalev, if he wants, will be re-signed to a similar contract. If he wants to brag about $$$.. he'll be gone.

Tanguay will be re-signed, as long as he doesn't ask for more than $6M.

Then we gotta sign Komisarek and Plekanec also.

Lang, Breezer, Dandy, Bouillon and maybe Kosto are all bye bye

Easy solution,
Win the Cup.
Koivu will retire I think if not he will sign for less than 3.75 million.
And you can keep all 3, Tanguay and Kovalev both want to win they will take discounts.

Lang may stay, depending on the salary he wants. If he asks for $3M for 1-year, I could see him staying.

Dandenault, Bouillon and Begin are likely gone. Brisebois, depending on the 1,000 games will be a maybe. There won't be really anyone fighting for his spot as the #7. Kosto will be re-signed because we have the room.

This is what we have right now;
Andrei - Plekanec - Sergei
Higgins - Chipchura - Latendresse
D'Agostini - Maxwell - Pacioretty
Stewart - Lapierre - Laraque
Desharnais, Glumac

Markov - Gorges
Hamrlik - O'Byrne
Weber - Carle
Henry

Price
Halak

Yikes.

We won't have to choose two out of three if two of them take hometown discounts.

What if they all are willing to play for less to play for a winner, just like Hossa in Detroit.

I can certainly see Koivu doing it, Kovalev and Tanguay have a bit of baggage in this league and may be happier to stay in a comfortable fit.

Realistically though...
Koivu and Tanguay are the keepers if we have to choose, based soley on Koivu's heart and Tanguay age. Kovalev is still one of the premier talents in the league so he'll command a big salary and unfortunately we won't be able to keep him and the others

I love Koivu but I'd have to pick Tanguay and Kovalev. Hopefully we can re-sign all three though.

Hossa still is making the most on the team 7.45 mil.

Lang would have to take less than that. Gainey and the Canadiens have not yet given up on Chipchura.

Though question. If I had to pick between the three now regardless of age and contract status I'd go with Koivu and Kovy. If only for the fact that Tanguay, although he's done very well so far, has only been a hab for 10 games and 10 games isn't enough to tell, especially considering they are early season games.

If I HAD to make a decision now however. I would go with Kovalev and Tanguay. Reason is right now I think Kovy is the mvp of this team (albeit shortly followed by Saku). He has better size, skills and shot. My only concern is the void it would leave at the center position.

Tanguay is a no-brainer if you consider age because he's a decade younger than the other two. I'm just not convinced that he has the leadership abilities that Kovy and Koivu have. That's something that can't be tought. Although I'm contradicting myself a bit because it's simply too early to tell in his case.

6m for tang

Exactly... we've already said we can begin to evaluate this in late january... any earlier than that is premature.

Maybe Tanguay would be willing to take a hometown discount too? Well, he's from Quebec....
$6M and 3 years?

Yup. But at this point it would depend on Kovalev. If he has another season like last year (and so far so good) he's going to have offers in the 7-8 mil range for 1 to 2 yrs with a no-trade. Just look at the numbers + the fact that he's used on the PK + the fact that he's media friendly etc now.

The guy could end up being one of the most wanted UFAs next year.

IF he wants to stay in Mtl at a discount your plan works. If he tests the open market he's gone.

Ideally all 3.

If one or more of them decide to test the market, I say we take all the money and throw it at Bouwmeester.

All three will be retained... As far as they all have a good season, they're all back IMO.
