11/01 - Predators vs Panthers - battle of the backups

Nashville Predators vs Florida Panthers

11/01/08 @ Sommet Center. No TV coverage.

Rinne will start in goal tonight for the Predators, giving starter Dan Ellis an extra night to rest his strained back.

Trotz said Ellis was healthy enough to play, but with a non-conference game it gives Rinne a chance to gain some momentum.
...
On the other side of the ice it will be Craig Anderson and not former Predator Tomas Vokoun who will appear in net.

“He’s been outstanding against us in the past when he was in Chicago,” Trotz said of Anderson. “So I don’t know if it’s good or bad, but it’s always nice to see Vouky and probably nicer to see him on the bench tonight than in the goal.”

Peverly expected back in the lineup according to Tennessean

This sucks. I have had this game marked on the schedule since July b/c of Vokoun. I love watching him when he is on and this will be one of very few chances we get to watch him this year b/c we dont get many Panther games around here

3 of the last 4 predators games have not been televised on Center Ice....This is ridiculous.

Weber continues to be money. I'm glad he will not be a FA at the end of his contract (see Suter, Ryan and Hamhuis, Dan).

Devries a minus 2 thus far....Any surprises?

EDIT: Looks like Leggy and Erat make something happen out of nothing. 2-2. We need to get a win against Anderson...

Rinne with back to back solid games.

Weber is proving he could be Norris worthy as soon as this season....a stunning 5 goals, 7 assists in 11 games.....2g/2a on the powerplay, 38 shots, 1 SHP, 10 PIMs. Lets see if he can keep his level of play up for the entire season...

We needed this win. I'm glad the Predators pulled it out.

devries was on ice for both goals true, but neither had a thing to do with him..

hamhuis caught reaching at the blueline with his stick, gets the long pass chipped around him on goal 1, and on goal two, hornqvist and dumont both totally lost out there and leave skratskins wide open from 20 feet out in the slot for about a minute.

legwand and erat did make something happen by using their speed and by driving hard to the net.. ugly little goal, as erat's stick barely touched it, but luck caused by doing the right things.

Thanks for the update. As stated earlier, this was the third of four games not aired on television/center ice. I have noticed Hamhuis has taken a beating defensively lately, and the games that have been on TV has shown a slow Devries. I'm not usually one to attach the whipping boy label to anyone on this team, but I will say Devries has seemed a bit weak out of the starting gates. I expect him to pick up his play a bit more. He isn't a star, but he should be perfectly fine as a no. 4.

i don't really disagree... but right now i do think hamhuis is struggling worse than devries honestly.. the two of them have been on ice for something like 11 of the 22 even strength goals we've allowed so far, and i would venture to bet hamhuis has been at fault directly for more of those 11 than devries has

For most of this game, you should be glad there was no TV. This looked for the most part like a Preds game from circa 1999 for skill level on both sides, and it looked like the water jugs had been spiked with sleeping pills.

Arnott also made a bad play on the 2nd goal fyi.

Rinne made some HUGE saves in the 2nd to keep us down by only 1 goal. He was really strong. I can't think of any forward that looked sharp- Ryan Jones played with some energy. Tootoo must have mono.

Oh well, 2 points.

What happened to Jones? I didn't notice him out there much at all in the third.

Sorry, I fell asleep in the 2nd intermission and the usher didn't wake me up until the overtime period.

it's also important to note that we are back to our #2 spot in the division where we belong.

Trotz said in the post game show that he switched Jones and Tootoo to get the crowd back into it. He thought the Panthers were gaining momentum and the crowd was falling asleep. During the conference, he really drove home the point that the players love to feed off the crowd and that we play a big part in keeping our players energized.

As far as Hammer/deVries being on the ice for both goals, well I don't remember which goal it was, but one was directly because the forwards did not either back check fast enough or failed to cover a pinching d-man. It's very hard to point the finger at one particular player on either of our goals against. They were simply Florida making the right play and forechecking/working hard. I don't really see how Arnott made a "bad" play.

I sure wasn't "energized" by Tootoo's presence on the second line...

Arny abandoned the slot to come over to take the Panther player near the boards but played neither the player nor the puck... he sort of half grabbed him and tried to dance a foxtrot or tango. The puck went right back to where he had been. "Highly ineffective" may have been a better description of his play.

At least Arnott picked up a man, Hornqvist and Dumont were no where to be found. Arnott made the right play even though he wasn't successful in stealing the puck away.
