The only reason he still plays is because O'Byrne has showed nothing to proove that he deserves the spot over Brisebois.
While I don't think he's been fabulous (hence my grade of B-) I still think he's been a very solid #7. But this discussion is going to go nowhere, so I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree.

Instead of using a grade, I'm just going to post my opinion as to how the player has performed against my expectations.

Overall Team: 17 points is better but they can still play better

Centers
Saku Koivu: + (especially after having missed most of training camp)
Robert Lang: even (as advertised)
Maxime Lapierre: + (I thought Chipchura would be centering the 4th line)
Thomas Plekanec: - (although he was getting and generating chances)

Left Wing
Steve Begin: - (I still prefer him to Dandy in the lineup)
Christopher Higgins: - (because of his injury)
Andrei Kostitsyn: - (will have to get past that hit and play to his abilities)
Alex Tanguay: + (great chemistry with Saku, and strong on the PP)
Guillaume Latendresse: + (if only he could have potted a few more...)

Right Wing
Mathieu Dandenault: + (never thought he's play at all)
Tom Kostopoulos: + (great effort every night)
Alex Kovalev: - (was driving me crazy with all his giveaways but sure turned in on in the 3rd)
Georges Laraque: - (slow, very slow)
Sergei Kostitsyn: - (great first few games, invisible lately)

Defense
Francis Bouillon: even (solid as usual)
Patrice Brisebois: - (is not a #4)
Josh Gorges: + (incredible on the PK)
Roman Hamrlik: even (great start, no so great lately)
Mike Komisarek: even (finally starting to play mean again)
Andrei Markov: + (WOW, may actually be shooting to much at times, imagine when he starts hitting the net)
Ryan O'Byrne: - (not as bad as most think, but getting worse as his confidence leaves him)

Goalies
Carey Price: Even (great goaltender)
Jaroslav Halak: Even (great goaltender, in spite of that bad start)

I'd give them an B+ to an A-. They could improve defensively a lot more.

Overall they are a balanced team, some players are in slumps, so are in career slumps (Brisebois), and others are just playing well without producing (see Lats).

Lets hope this will continue.

The sad thing is that.. as Pleks and Kovy is finally picking up in the last period vs Isles, now they have to rest 5 days.. and they, i guess they'll have to start all over again..

I don't think they'll pick up where they left it.

I give everyone the team an A- because we are a team. When one player struggles, the other pick it up.

Anyone who rates O'Byrne higher than any other D should get his head examined.

I dont think they played that well at all actually, We somehow come out of that with a 8-1-1 Record, which is pretty sick considering i dont think we even started to gel quite yet. I really think we needed a game like saturdays comeback against NYI. This will surely build caracter and help the guy get their chemistry back. Just like last year when they made their comeback againts first NJ then NYR. Its sick to think of how the team would be if both top lines were comfident and producing. I know im biased and all but i dont see many Defenses in the league that could shut us down for 60 mins.

So overall idd give em a B+

Go habs go.

I was trying to figure out how you'd get out of having to grade Brisebois.

Well done

I give the habs a 10 out of 10 for October because they had the best win % in the whole league. Sure, some of there wins weren't that graceful, but actual victories are always better then moral victories!

Tons of turnovers at the offensive blue line with his weak wrist shot, a wrist shot that hits the goalie 1 time out of ten. I remember a shift when he pinched and got caught, he was on the board near the offensive circle, instead of going back, he just stood there and try to block the pass from the defenseman but it lead to an easy 2 on 1, and he was one of the last that came back in the habs zone. That for me was unacceptable for a veteran. Its kinda hard to explain the play but it made him look very ridiculous.

Let me get this straight: his poor play this season is pinned on one play from one game?

Well you don't expect him to pin-point every bad play he has done this season do you.

No its one example of the same type of play he makes all the time....

He gave up numerous turnovers in the buffalo game
he was bad in the ducks game
he gave up a late breakaway in a one goal game in minnesota...
he was weak on the boards and had giveaways against boston....

Breezy is quite simply not a good defensive defenceman.

I think that your assessment of some players is really severe. How could Tanguay not deserve a A+? Why does Dandenault deserves a D? He has been really serviceable this year... and no, I am not a Dandenault fan...

Cheers buddy!
100% pure love juice post ... dandy did play well ...

and peaking at the right time is what we need to do this year ....

I think there are some fans from a NHL team that will remain nameless - Boston - that beg to differ. You obviously have not seen all the moral victory banners The Bruins have draped from their rafters.

I dont know what to say. Results wise, you have to give an A+... but I'm not exactly thrilled with how they seem to prefer the hard road to get there. Are they toying around with their opposition or is it just a matter of the team getting still finding their way?

Here are my observations, keep in mind that I'm a tough grader:

Centers

Saku Koivu: A Almost play-off quality Saku, has been great to watch.
Robert Lang: C+ Has been very solid in his role, would have been a B had he not missed so many open nets
Maxime Lapierre: C Has played better than I expected.
Thomas Plekanec: C- Snakebitten in the first few games, hopefully he's over it with his 4 pt night

Left Wing

Steve Begin: D Mr. bad penalties in worse moments hasn't learned his lesson yet.
Christopher Higgins:C- He's slowly coming back from injury and has looked better every game.
Andrei Kostitsyn: D A known slow starter
Sergei Kostitsyn: C- Has been invisible for a few games now.
Alex Tanguay: B+ Looks like a great acquisition so far.

Right Wing

Mathieu Dandenault: D Hasn't shown anything too good or bad so far.
Tom Kostopoulos: C- Has been solid in his role
Alex Kovalev: B- Hasn't looked his best so far, yet maintains a PPG pace, and has proved that he can still win a game on his own.
Georges Laraque: C- Can fight, but can't do much else.
Guillaume Latendresse: C Has slowed down in the last few games.

Defense

Francis Bouillon: C Has been good since coming back
Patrice Brisebois: F Maybe its already time to rest him for the play-offs (or his retirement press conference)
Josh Gorges: C- It feels to me like he's taken a bit of a step back since last year.
Roman Hamrlik: B Always solid.
Mike Komisarek: B- Ditto.
Andrei Markov: A+ Without a doubt the MVP of the team so far, this guy should be in serious contention for the Norris is he keeps his pace
Ryan O'Byrne: F Hopefully this is just an adjustment period.

Goalies

Carey Price: B Has been good enough to give us a chance to win all the games he's started.
Jaroslav Halak: D Hasn't.
