hartnell isn't going anywhere, he's here for the longhaul unless we're bringing back a top-end defenseman

After this year if shanny is gone we could find someone that is a hartnell type but for much less money.
I would consider losing Hartnell for a short term option like Shanahan a bad move.

I never said to cut him Obviously if we move him for some cap relief it would be to bring back a dman at a lower cost. I never said to cut hartnell loose just to get shanny.

On Shanahan

Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren spoke with the media after practice on Tuesday to discuss meeting with unrestricted free agent Brendan Shanahan on Monday.

“This was an exploratory meeting on our part and on Brendan’s part as well,” said Holmgren. “I’m not sure of the time frame. I don’t think it’s going to be a couple weeks from now before he decides. I know he wants to play and I would think by within a week to 10 days he’ll make up his mind.

“There are some holes we’d have to jump through in order to get it done, but I think if you have an opportunity to add a player of his stature it makes sense to look into it.”

Do you guys have a bad PP? Your team can score, so unless you have a bad PP he wouldn't really be useful for you.

Well who from EC would you want?

Hartnell is a little more then just agitator. He can score 25 goals.

Yeah, the guy barely outscored Hartnell playing alongside Crosby...we could do a lot worse than paying Scott $4.2M.

agreed. the only problem is, I think we have 1 to many big contracts on offense. i love beriere but would also love to be able to spend his money on D and goaltending with the emergence oif carter and continued improvement of richards

If Briere didn't have a NMC, I'm looking to ship him out for a defenseman and bring in Matt Stajan for the third line. Lots of rumours up here that he could be moved this year. Or put together a deal like Briere + something for Kaberle and Stajan.

The worst cap hit we have right now is Andrew Alberts at $1.25 million.

We can waive him. A team with injuries on D would probably pick him up. We couldn't do it until Jones comes back and shows he is ready to play, though.

Yes, demote him to the AHL. If he's claimed on the way down, the claiming team assumes his entire contract. If nobody does, he's off the cap and the Flyers have themselves an expensive AHL dman.

Yeah, I can vouch for that. Stajan is pretty solid for the third line. I wouldn't mind that if it were a possibility. I read around the boards and many feel Kabarle is overrated, I don't feel the same way. He's a solid defenseman.

agreed. That would be a nice trade if it could happen. We add a top-4 d-man and a solid 2 way center

Briere, Knuble, 2nd
for
Kaberle, Stajan

sign Shanahan

Gagne-Richards-Shanny
Upshall-Carter-Lupul
Hartnell-Stajan-Knuble
Ahsam-Metropolt-Cote

Timmonen-Coburn
Kaberle-Vananen
Jones-Parent
Sbisa-Eminger

we lose offensive power but we no would have a more complete team.

i don't get how some people want to trade him. his salary goes down through the life of his contract, and when he's in the last two years of his deal (when he'll be 30 and 31) he'll only be making 3.7 and 3.2 mill. I know, i know, cap hit still stays the same, but honestly...he's important to this team right now and at that point, at the very worst, will be equally important.

with comcast as our owner, cap hit is all that matters as we can pay the salary

He's no worse than a number two dman. His value is somewhat inflated due to his contract.
