Maybe I'm naive, ok , I am naive, but if 2 guys have a relationship of mutual respect, I'd like them to be able to say, 'at the end of every year, let's sit down and see if we're on the same page'.
I'd be very curious to see if Kovalev and Koivu would both be of that mind, and whether Gainey would deal with them in that way. Even if in 2 year increments...
After his first knee injury Saku negotiated and accepted one year deals so I don't think he'd view such an offer as an affront.
Another factor to consider is that it appears that league wide revenue may be slipping, so short term deals may be very prudent for Saku, Kovalev and Tanguay (at least as far as the Canadiens are concerned).
The biggest key to resigning these key guys (along with Komisarek etc...) will be the success of the club, if the Habs have a strong year and go deep in the playoffs it should make it easier to retain all of them.
I don't have to say it....but I'll say it....the sooner we sign them, the cheaper it will be. I know it takes 2 to tango, but I was just expecting to hear some news much earlier at least in the case of Komi and even Koivu. We should start soon 'cause there's a lot of guys waiting....

Has anyone noticed that he carries himself a little differently this year ? He seems a little bit more at ease, more comfortable somehow, and it seems that the people covering the team are more at ease with him. I'm not sure what it is, but things just seem a little bit less intense in the way he speaks and the way he's spoken about.

I would love for Koivu to sing a 3-4 year extension as long as the dollars make sense. He's showing he still has a lot left in the tank and he is the heart and soul of the team.

Thanks, a nice story has now descended into the typical generalizations that we so often get bogged down in. I think people probably understand him a bit better and he probably understands that the loudest voice doesn't always represent a majority.

WS, I think that this is also a generalization. I have a long hallway adjacent to my office, and I can confirm that it in fact, does not take 2 to tango. Maybe to make any kind of sense it does, but you can tango alone.

Some people on here must be on a different planet...so Koivu is only worth 3 mil a year? Is this in the same league where Drury Gomez and Briere made about 8 mil last year...and he is as good as any of those guys. Briere is a PP specialist, Koivu is a much much better all around player. Drury had similar numbers, Gomez has better numbers, maybe he is worth a bit more.
On the open markey Koivu gets 5-6 mil per year on a 2-3 year deal...especially if he keeps up his current pace(or at least puts up around 70 points).
Best case for the Habs he signs a front loaded 4 year deal to reduce the cap hit like 7 mil 1st yr, 5 mil the 2nd yr, 4 mil the 3rd year and 3 mil the 4th...19 mil over 4 years 4.75 cap hit. I'd try that with Komi Koivu Kovalev and Tanguay. Obviously Tanguay and Komi you can go 5-6 years given they are under 30 and probably have 5-6 more good years. Kovy and Koivu probably have 2 good years and 2 lesser years.

Koivu is worth a lot more than that on the open market. If Sundin is worth a 2 year 20 mil deal, do you think Koivu's agent will accept 10 mil over 3 from the Habs? You're not living in the real world.
Wade Redden had a worst year than Koivu and he signed at 6.5 mil for 5 or 6 years.
Drury is about the same age, style and production and he signed for an average cap hit of over 7 mil.
Koivu had few points last year because he played mostly because Ryder had a crappy 1st half and they never found a good fit on LW for that line, plus the Plekanec line got more ice time 5 on 5 and ok PK. For here and now 95% of hockey execs take Koivu ahead of Plekanec.

Naslund got 4, Erat got 4.5, even Demitra got 4. Those guys all had similar production to Koivu last year, and I'd argue that Koivu brings more to the game than any of them.

Taking a home town discount doesn't mean playing for half of what he can get on the market.
A home town discount is taking 16-19 mil over 4 years(front loaded). Over 4 years Koivu can get 20 to 22 AT LEAST on the UFA market. You don't think Vancouver would pay that if they are offering 20 min over 2 years for Sundin?
Wow. I like Koivu and all, great guy, great player, got his poster on my wall, but the thought of him getting Markov money is plain ridiculous to me. Sure, lets not afford the rest of our UFAs and live with Koivu and a mediocre team like we have for years.

You are not living in the real world. Briere Drury Gomez are probably not worth 7+ mil over 5-6-7 years but they got it as UFA's...Sundin is not with 10 mil but the offer was on the table. As a UFA Koivu would get at least 11-12 mil over 2 years or 15-17 mil over 3...that's minimum. His agent is not a moron, and a home town discount is not 30-40%, it's 10% or less.
