The Philadelphia Flyers announced that they have acquired 6’0”, 205-pound defenseman Matt Carle and the San Jose Sharks’ third round pick in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft from the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for Steve Eminger, Steve Downie and Tampa Bay’s fourth round pick in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft, according to club General Manager Paul Holmgren.
“Matt Carle is a good young defenseman and we are thrilled to add a player with his abilities to our roster,” said Holmgren in making the announcement. “He will add skill and speed to our lineup and should fit in great with our team.”
“I also would like to thank Steve Eminger and Steve Downie for their professionalism as players here and we wish them nothing but the best in the future.”
Carle, 24, recorded a goal and an assist for two points and six penalty minutes in 12 games for the Lightning this season. He is second on the team in blocked shots (27) and third on the team in average time on ice (21:57 minutes per game). He was acquired by the Lightning, along with Ty Wishart, a first round pick in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft and a fourth round pick in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft, from San Jose in exchange for Dan Boyle and Brad Lukowich on July 4, 2008.
Flyers deal Downie, Eminger to Tampa Bay for defenseman Carle
By ED MORAN
Philadelphia Daily News
While the Flyers continue to wait for news from free agent winger Brendan Shanahan, they made a more critical move to strengthen their ailing defense, sending Steve Downie and Steve Eminger to Tampa Bay for 24-year-old defenseman Matt Carle.
According to a team source, the deal was made late Friday afternoon, and Carle is expected to be in uniform against his former team Saturday night. Carle, 6-foot, 210 pounds, was voted to the 2006-07 NHL all-rookie team while playing for San Jose. That season, he scored 11 goals and 31 assists. He was traded to Tampa Bay last season for Dan Boyle and Brad Lukowich.
Defensemen Ryan Parent (shoulder) and Randy Jones (hip) are sidelined with serious injuries.

Wow. That's a horrible move. Carle has looked terrible.

So the Flyers become the 3rd team to give Carle a shot?
And now it's Steve Downie, a 1st & a 4th for Matt Carle and 2 3rds?
Crap.
I really hope Carle works out. I also hope Downie does well in Tampa; he really belonged in the AHL for the last year or two. The Flyers mishandled him.

HORRIBLE move, Carle isn't living up to his contract and Downie is gonna come back to bite us in the ass. We ****ed around with him wayyy to much. The only reason for the stunt in his development is our terrible coaching staff and Homer's refusal to fix it.
I guess i am the only fan of this trade right now. Considering how much i dont like Downie and the way Eminger has underachieved, we get Carle who WILL turn out to be a catch. Just give him time to mesh. Honestly, I wouldnt play my hardest if I was playing for Tampa either. He is young, great defensive skill, and I think this was a damn good trade because we moved up int he draft as well. Kudos to Homer as much as people right now dont like this.
