Nashville @ Colorado

@

@

Overview: After a pair of losses that resulted in the team being outscored 11-6, the Nashville Predators return to America (**** yeah!) to take on the Colorado Avalanche, a team that has had quite a few struggles of its own. The Avs come in with a five game losing streak, being outscored by an combined 21-8. The high-flying Predators were outscored 11-6 in their two games north of the border, but will seek to improve their GAA against this struggling Colorado team, while Colorado looks to break out of its funk and get back in the thick of the playoff race.
Who gets the unfortunate distinction of being the streak-breaker tonight?

Predators Team Leaders
Goals: Shea Weber, Martin Erat, 7
Assists: Jean-Pierre Dumont, 14
Points: Dumont, 16
Power Play Goals: Jason Arnott, 4
Power Play Scoring: Dumont, 7 (0g-7a)
Short-Handed Goals: Weber, Ward, Fiddler, 1
Short-Handed Scoring: Weber (1g-1a), Nichol (2a), 2
Shots: Weber, 43
Shooting Percentage: Arnott, 30.0%
Plus-Minus: Ward, Weber, +4
Penalty Minutes: Jordin Tootoo, 24
Hits: Dan Hamhuis, 30
Blocked Shots: Greg Zanon, 38
Giveaways: Dumont, 9
Takeawas: Hamhuis, Tootoo, 10
Turnover Differential: Tootoo, +7
Wins: Dan Ellis, 4-6-1
GAA: Rinne, 3.90
Save Percentage: Ellis, 88.3%
Shutouts: None Recorded

Predators Fun Fact: Martin Erat is now just one goal away from tying Greg Johnson and Scott Hartnell at third on the all-time goal-scoring list.

Predators Player to Watch:
After a slow start, it appears David Legwand may finally be starting to come around offensively, with five points in his last four games.

Predators Reason to Worry: The Predators have the worst road penalty kill in the entire NHL, at a disheartening 66.7%. With Colorado's power play clickking at 18.4% at the Pepsi Center, this could be a rough night if the Preds can't stay out of the box.

Predators Injuries
Joel Ward (Head, Out)
Martin Erat (Upper Body Injury, Doubtful)

Predators Projected Lineup
Hörnqvist-Arnott-Dumont
Jones-Legwand-Erat
Peverley-Nichol-Tootoo
Fiddler-Bonk-Smithson

Weber-Suter
Hamhuis-De Vries
Zanon-Koistinen

Avalanche Team Leaders
Goals: Milan Hejduk, 8
Assists: Paul Stastny, Joe Sakic, 10
Points: Hejduk, 13
Power Play Goals: Hejduk, Stastny, 3
Short-Handed Goals: None Recorded
Shots: Hejduk, 45
Shooting Percentage: Ben Guite, 22.2%
Plus-Minus: Guite, +3
Penalty Minutes: Ian Laperriere, 50
Wins: Peter Budaj, 3-7-0
Goals Against Average: Budaj, 3.40
Save Percentage: Budaj, 87.4%
Shutouts: None Recorded

Avalanche Fun Fact: Agitator Darcy Tucker will be looking for his 200th career NHL goal tonight.

Avalanche Player to Watch: T.J. Hensick, recently recalled from Erie, will be expected to make some things happen on the lower lines and is more than capable of doing so after posting 13 points in 10 games in the AHL, and an assist in his first game with the AVs this season.

Avalanche Reason to Worry: The Avs have one of the most porous goaltending tandems in the NHL. Peter Budaj and Andrew Raycroft have conceded a combined 45 goals in 13 contests (a 3.46 GAA), and have a combined save percentage of just 88.3%.

Avalanche Injuries

Scott Hannan, D (Flu-like symptoms, Game-Time Decision)
Daniel Tjärnqvist (Foot)
Joe Sakic (Back, Game-Time Decision)

Avalanche Projected Lineup
Smyth-Stastny-Hejduk
Wolski-Sakic-Svatos
McLeod-Hensick-Tucker
McCormick-Guite-Laperriere

Liles-Hannan

Budaj

Media Coverage:

team playing like crap..
5 game road losing streak..
erat, our leading goal scoring forward probably out..
ward, the guy who's probably been our best pk'er out..
penalty kill playing terrible...
defense playing awful..
dumont, our leading scorer and playmaker hobbled..
our goalies both struggling horribly..
ellis, the starter with a 6 game streak of allowing 3 or more goals..

therefore... one has to like our chances tonight.. we're due.

probable forward lines i would guess (really, why dress 7 defensemen when klein-koistinen are both struggling?)..
hornqvist-arnott-dumont
peverley-legwand-jones
tarnasky-fiddler-tootoo
smithson-nichol-bonk

a lineup that should put fear in the av's players hearts... (and will have many of their fans looking thru their programs and saying, "who are these guys?")...

Its funny you phrased the post like this because I was thinking the same thing! We are due, and when are backs are against the wall, we usually pull out a few wins (except in the playoffs).

We have had a few chances, most of them of the dirty variety (up close and personal at the net). Our PK survived 2 early powerplays.....We need to eke out a win here.

Nichol took the heel his stick blade off the ice.

Tucker's 200th career NHL goal.

Well Nichol's lazy, idiotic play is a microcosm of our entire season - bad defensive play, mostly from our forwards, costing us games. Thanks Nichol!

You guys blame Nichol when we don't even come close to scoring a goal ourselves? You can't win a game when scoring zero goals.

and get the GWG in shootout which is technically still no goal. so yes, you can win without scoring a goal. that's the new NHL.

i only watched parts of the 1st and the whole 2nd, but where's the team from 2 weeks ago?

i don't know who to scratch, because i don't know all players that well, but what your team might need is a high-energy guy with scoring ability. a gritty guy who is able to crash the net. yes, i'm talking about pihlstrom.

and of course you need sulzer.

yep..still feels fairly depressing this morning..

for the cup is half full crowd..
..it was nice to see us limit them to only 20 shots,
..ellis played well, easily his best game of the season.
..that save on smyth was as good a save as we'll see this year.
..the defense did more than limit their shots, they limited legitimate scoring chances to about 8 or 9, even with us killing 9 frigging penalties.
..hornqvist with a miracle save with one second left on the open net made it look better on the scoreboard.
..the pk really played a heck of a game. they had to because not only did we take all those penalties, but the Avs kept possession of the puck in our zone almost the entire time they had on the pp. amazing they didn't score two or three pp goals.

for the cup is half empty crowd..
..fiddler was called offsides three times himself. the guy is a walking offsides, always has been, have been complaining about it for years. this does, and always has driven me crazy about the guy.
..peverley is as soft on the puck as an 8 year old peewee player.
..teams are beginning to figure out you have to take the point shot away from weber and will begin doing it more and more.
...it's doubtful we generated more than 9 scoring chances ourselves. normally you assume you have to generate about 5 per period to score 3 goals..
..of our 26 shots, at least 10-12 were unscreened slap shots from the faceoff circles as we broke across the blueline. with no one else close for traffic or rebounds. wasted shots that in effect just turn the puck over to them.

..many are saying 'we played much better defensively'.. and we did. and 'ellis played well' and he did. but to be honest and realistic, they hit three posts solid with ellis beaten and down on ice. this game could easily have been another 4-0 type blowout just like the VAN game. in fact probably should have been, because their scoring chances were that much better and nearer going in scoring chances than ours were. i fell almost 'lucky' we only lost 1-0.
