If the Kings get a win here they start to really turn some heads... When it comes to standings that is, not for beating a struggling Stars team. GO KINGS!

If you are meaning actually during a season, then it would've been in the 05/06 season which is when they actually finished over .500 as well. The last two seasons, after the first 4 games they were never .500 again. If they win tonight, they'll still be under .500 but their point total will be above a .500 record.

The Kings are 5-6-2 now. If they win tonight, they'll be at 6-6-2 = .500.

Winning 6 (hypothetically, of course) out of 14 games isn't really .500...

.462, from the link you posted.

Kings are just under .500 right now. A win would put them close to or just over .500.

If you are going by point totals, the Kings would be .500 if they win tonight but they technically will have lost more games than they won. Using a winning percentage in hockey doesn't make a whole lot of sense considering you are rewarded for (overtime/shoutout) losses. That is something I don't get. I think the extra point should only go to the loser of a shootout since it is essentially a tiebreaker and not the result of actual game play. If you lose a game in OT, you lost it. It makes no sense to reward a team for making to the overtime period. If a team had something to lose in overtime they'd probably try a lot harder.

Actually, it's exactly the opposite. If team's didn't get the OT point, they would play conservative in OT and take their chances in the shootout. That is exactly the reason the league went to 4 on 4 with a guaranteed point in overtime.

If the Kings are 6-6-2, that means they have earned exaclty .500 of avaliable points.

Since the NHL determines its standings by points, not W/L ratio, I would say that 6-6-2 is a .500 record.

It makes absolutely no sense to reward somebody for a loss. When they originally started giving an extra point for making to overtime, there was no shootout. The logic was that teams would get to overtime and just play consertively so you reward the team that actually wins the game outright instead of playing for a tie by giving an extra point. Now that there is a shootout, games that are not won before the OT period expired are essentially tied. If you took away the point in OT, teams that don't perform well in shootouts would certainly try to end the game in OT especially if you are playing a division rival. I think for the most part, teams are probably trying to win the game when it gets to OT but it makes absolutely no sense to reward a team for losing a game. Losing a game in OT is losing the game. In my opinion, losing the game in a shootout should essentially be a tie game with the extra point being won in a tiebreaker. I don't think it would be fair to only give the winner of the shootout points since they didn't actually lose the hockey game.

No, they wouldn't. They'd be guaranteed a point if they got to the shootout, so they would play conservative. Play wide open for an outside chance at 2 points or play safe for a near-sure 1 point and maybe 2? Teams would do the latter, I'm pretty sure.

If you have a chance to steal 2 points from a division/conference rival, I think you'll try. And especially if your playoff hopes depend on it. Maybe the yshould increase the OT period to 10 minutes too? It is a lot harder to hold on for 10 minutes than it is for 5.

Either way, my main point is giving points out for losing defeats the purpose of the game. You play to win, not tie or lose. What other sport rewards teams for losing? All that really changed by them giving a point in OT is now teams try and hang on in the third period. It just pushed it forward a little.
