Possibly realized that regardless of how good a coach he may have been, the influx of new officials overall really sucked and wanted nothin to do with them.

...More like personal reasons. His off-ice job kept him away from his family almost as much as his on-ice job did.

My bets are on Terry Gregson taking over the job. He has been the NHL's senior on-ice official for years, and now retired, he is the perfect candidate for the job.

Thats one of the 3 stooges down, now only if Bettman and Campbell will follow and hopefully we can get back to the game we all love.

I have nothing but disgust for Van Hellemond, under him the NHL had the most clueless bunch of officials I have ever seen in any sport.

Considering that Andy van Hellemond had to double the number of referees due to the two-referee system, which meant handing contracts out to young, and inexperienced referees, I think he did a marvelous job.

He was the best on-ice official the game has seen in recent years (Red Storey is the best of all time), and as Colin Campbell said, he was the best coach for on-ice officials the game has ever seen.

No matter who the NHL hires to take Andy's job, and no matter how much officiating changes (if it does change), the same people will make the same complaints about officiating night in, night out.

good. the guy couldnt call a game when he was on the ice to save his life. putting him in charge of the refs is a perfect case of the blind leading the blind.

Which game is that? The one where bashing the refs was just as common as it is today?

Because officiating is a huge problem for the NHL. Every fan is going to be upset at some point or another because it affects their team but you see both sets of fans critisising a ref in the same match or a set of fans having a go at refs even though they win a playoff series.

He is the biggest problem in officiating because no matter how hard they try, all officials cant possibly be as inept as they appeared last year without being told to be like that.

While it might be cliched or whatever to bash the refs, I cannot say I am upset at this news.

Not that it matters, but in the only interview I have ever heard with him, he sounded like a complete moron.
