OT: Rick Tocchet named interim head coach of Tampa Bay Lightning

http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/
Quote:

The Tampa Bay Lightning have relieved head coach Barry Melrose of his duties and named associate coach Rick Tocchet interim head coach.

''This was a tough decision to make,'' Executive Vice President & General Manager Brian Lawton said. ''Barry is a good man and we have a great deal of respect for him. We wish him nothing but success. However, the results were unacceptable and the players have to understand that we need to be better. Hopefully this change helps push them.

The Lightning are in the midst of a three-game slump and are 4-5-1 in the past 10 games, dropping them to fourth in the Southeast Division standings. Under Melrose, they won just five of 16 games to open the season (5-7-4).

Owners Len Barrie and Oren Koules were guests on Off The Record in late October and when asked by host Michael Landsberg if the coach was safe, Koules was clear and concise.

''Very safe,'' he said.
From yesterday's St.Pete Times:

Quote:

"It wasn't a meeting to embarrass people," he said Wednesday. "It was a meeting (to say), 'This is where I see us after 14 games.' These are the guys I think are buying into what I'm selling. These are the guys who have got to buy into what I'm selling."

"I'm an easy guy to play for," Melrose added. "I'm not a big rules guy. I don't think integrity needs rules. I just ask them to come and compete every night. When we do that, we're an excellent hockey club. When we try to do it for 20 minutes, when we try to do it for 40 minutes, it costs you. … And that's not acceptable."

As for skipping Tuesday's practice and handing it to associate coach Rick Tocchet, Melrose said it is something he will do periodically through the season to give each side a break from the other.

what a dumb move to hire him.

Hopefully we follow up with a firing of our own

If the Lightning can fire their coach with less than 20 games played, isn't 2 seasons of the same old **** here ENOUGH?

They're a circus. A complete circus. I wonder if Vinny likes the 11-year contract he signed considering what has gone on since then.

From what I read, Tocchet was responsible for a very vocal tongue-lashing after the first period of the Lightning's game against Philly.

So now Downie gets to play for Rick Tocchet. I like that, good for both of them.

Melrose was put in a no-win situation, and Tocchet is just going to be the stool pigeon now. You got the team owners coming down and drawing plays between periods. You got someone in that dressing room letting that out to the media. You got an organization in complete dysfunction and a couple of cowboys who think they're hot **** for it. I said Tampa will be among the league's worst, and I said that the owners won't know who the blame since it's their fault. It's going to get worse for Tampa before it gets better.

Good for Rick, I guess. Too bad it's with the biggest joke of an organiztion in the NHL.

As an aside, what's the NHL going to do with the commercial where Barry Melrose is convinced to use NHL.com over his assistants? There's a distinct irony to that commercial now.

Ya gotta feel bad for him. All that talented wasted on a team run by people who don't have a clue.

Downie and Tocchet together is a scarey thought for opposing teams (read: us)
Like you, I wish them both well.

Insert a photo of John Buccigross over his shoulder and change the audio?

I want to hear John Tortorella's thoughts. In typical fashion, he made no bones about how he was treated, but I wonder what he thinks of his successor lasting only 5 weeks into the season.

Tampa isn't exactly a model organization. The fact that they fired Melrose so quick proves that they are absolutely clueless. Melrose wasn't a good hiring, but he's not the problem.

I completely agree with this. I'd be embarrassed if I was a fan of the Lightning. I feel bad for their fans because it's an absolute gong show in TB.

Sadly, to a lesser extent, you could say the same thing with us right now (coaching).

They were last in the NHL last year, but they are not last now, and they still fire him? That's pretty lame. granted, they are still not good, but what do they expect?
