Martin has quietly become one of the better defensive dmen in the East, while still having the talent to chip in offensively. Before he got hurt, he had become the third best player on the Devils, after Brodeur and Parise, and really not all that far off from Parise.

He's overlooked because he plays a very subtle style, relying on his stick and smarts to shutdown offensive players. He's also a decent skater and above average offensively. Honestly, I see him playing a similar quiet but effective style as Lidstrom. Obviously, he's nowhere close to as good as Lidstrom, but the style is similar. Martin is kind of like a ghetto dimestore version of Lidstrom, which is still very good.

While I agree Martin is pretty damn good, this statement borders on absurd because it's not even close to being true.

They are absolutely not "worse" defensively. These two are 30 minute a night defensemen for a reason.

Martin is great and all, but those two are arguable top 10 dmen in the league, with good reason.

They're excellent all around. It's not even a comparison, really.

How many dmen in the Atlantic are better than Martin? Timonen is having an off-year. Gonchar would be the best if he were healthy, but he might be out the whole season.

Even if the statement isn't true, it's certainly close at this point.

Timonen and Gonchar were arguably top 10 dmen in the league last year, but Timonen had a slow start this year, and Gonchar might not play all season. Right now, I'd still take T

As for average time on ice this year:
Martin 25:51
Timonen 25:56

Huge difference.

Anyway, Timonen should still be ahead of Martin based on past accomplishments, but the gap isn't that big.

No, you voted for the player that you see play most. I watch most Leafs games and ive been to atleast 15 games per year. I see how Kubina screws up defensively, he is however better than Martin Offensively, but it just seems you dont watch the Devils much. Martin is quietly becoming one of the top d-men in the east, he may be the number 1 defensive d-man in the atlantic already.

Yea a couple of games is really going to determine whether a player is good or not don't you think?

Martin's a great defenseman, but I would also say Coburn is a better player than him.

I've only ever seen Kubina play. Haven't really noticed Martin at all when they play the Leafs, so my vote is a bit biased.
