Most would agree that Parent is considered the greatest goalie in Flyers history.

Now if Hextall stole that Cup in '87 or any other year, do you think he would be considered the best in franchise history?

Should be noted, Hextall is the all-time leader in wins for the team...

IMO, Hexy is the best.

Hextall also didn't have his career cut short, which is why he has more wins. Some will tell you he is better than Parent anyways. I don't think it's a terribly wide gap between he, Pelle and Bernie.

Hexy rocks.

Any goalie who will fly out of the net and beat the **** out of Chris Chelios right after he crosses the blue line is the best, hands down.

In terms of playing ability, he does lead this team in wins all-time.

Hexy was great, but...I would take Bernie over him every day of the week.

Hextall would be close to a unanimous choice for the most popular Flyers' goalie ever but still not the best. The two seasons Parent won Cups may be the best two consecutive seasons of any goalie in the post-expansion era.

if i were to compare the 2, i would say parent is the thumb of the hand, without it, you may not be able to function as good as you can.

hexy would be the beloved popular and most used middle finger.

but have etched their own place in history

Some could argue Hexy did have his career cut short (or rather his prime cut short) by that groin injury. He was never the same after it.

Hextall was good, real good...but not better than Parent.

Where it get's convoluted, is that Hextall is arguably one of the most popular players in the history of the franchise.

Better goalie, Parent.

Most popular, Hextall.

This exact scenario is what turned my blood orange!

Hextall wasn't that good after 87. He had lots of good games and then lots of poor ones. Inconsistency ruled between the pipes back then too.

87 was amazing though. The performance that year and especially playoffs has been the best performance I have ever seen by a Flyers goalie, however it was short lived and he never "stole the show" like that again.

Parent had a great career. Hextall's career wasn't as good.

ITA. Bernie was better. However, Hexy did bring the whole goalie handling the puck element into the NHL.

Granted, I was young at the time but as one of the few here that saw them both play regularly it's absolutely Parent. You can look at stats all you want, when the game was on the line you knew, beyond doubt, that Bernie would clamp down and be the clutch guy. How much would you pay for that in any other era of Flyers history. This team would have 10+ cups if there was a Parent for the 80's, 90's & 00's. Hexy's one of my fav all time Flyers but you're underestimating how rarely a player like Parent comes around.

IMHO it's very close. Hextall lost to two great teams in the finals and we all know about the Conn Smyth in a losing cause.

How many finals was Parent in?

I'm watching "Flyers 40th Anniversary" on NHL Network Canada...man, this is awesome!

1. Parent
2. Hextall
3. Lindbergh

I was actually thinking about this last night, but wondering if they would ever retire his number. So of course what comes to mind is comparing him to Parent. Parent was a better goalie and has the cups. Hextall, however, was one of the goalies who changed the way goaltenders played and is the Flyers all time leader in wins (but not shutouts). If Hexy had won at least 1 cup, this might be totally different. I can't say he was the best Flyers goalie ever, but he is the best example of a Flyer and one of the better goalies we've had (especially compared to the goalies who followed him). I agree with CNote, top 3 only behind Parent.

I have to agree with a previous poster. Hextall's overall popularity among Flyers fans really skews the debate behind the question in his favour. I would have to say that in terms of overall TALENT...it would be

Parent
Lindbergh
Hextall

On the same token I would have to say in terms of popularity it would have to be

Hextall
Parent
Linbergh

In terms of just overall coolest mo-fo's ever to play net for us...

Pete Peeters
Dominic Roussel
Tommy Soderstrom

LOL, Hexty could have won 5 cups and he still wouldn't be better than Bernie. Parent was one of the best goalies OF ALL TIME!!!. The Flyers had no business even being in the playoffs with the teams they had in their 2 cup years let alone winning it all. Bernie flat out won us those cups just about all by himself. Yes we had a few really good players on those teams but overall, we were a bad team compared to most. Bernie MADE those teams. If Hexty was as good as Bernie then the Flyers probably would have won at least 2 cups in the 80's and we wouldn't have been swept by the Wings in the 90's.

I like Hexty and he's one of my favorite players of all time but I think you'd be hard pressed to put him in even the top 50 goalies of all time whereas Bernie is easily in the top 10 and if not for injuries would most likely be counted as a top 5 and possible a top 3 of all time. Bernie was seriously that damn good.

Lindberg showed some of Bernies same quickness and ability but he was also HUGELY inconsistant and acutally overall, Frose was a much more consistant goalie and probably better for the team. Lindberg could be just unbeatable but he could also have games where he had more holes than Swiss Cheese. Because of his potential, most people consider Lindberg as the Flyers 2nd best goalie and Hexty as the 3rd best.

That doesn't help, most on here are too young to know who he is.

Ridiculous. Yes I'm a Devils fan, and yes I loathe everything the Flyers. But Bernie Parent is one of the greatest goalies ever, Hextall isn't even in the same league. And I'm a HUGE Hextall fan.

No one is really comparing Parent to Hexy, are they? Please god tell me it's not so.

If hextall had won 4 cups, maybe it would be close.
