Les Jackson pretty much said this would happen yesterday:
Quote:
Cut out of today's story (for space concerns) was an interesting point by co-GM Les Jackson.
He was with the team when they went through this same struggle back in 2003-04:
Jackson, who has been with the Stars since before they moved to Dallas, said he looks back at the 2003-04 season. The Stars had an 11-15-3 start, and there was much discussion about a coaching change or some major trades during some big meetings in Phoenix. However, Tippett remained in charge and the only move they made before February was acquiring Jon Klemm on defense. Dallas immediately went on a 6-1-1 run and finished the season at 41-26-15.
``I definitely think we can look at something like that as a great example of what's possible for us,'' Jackson said. ``But we also have to realize that took a lot of hard work and a lot of teamwork. It's possible, but we have to make it happen.''
The GM's were right. They aren't planning on doing anything to help this team.
But you just got what you've been asking for for a year? Aren't you happy?
Boucher was never going to bring big return, and dealing him at the nadir of his value is idiotic. If you're making a move to make a move, then you need to at least keep the team in the same position of strength for future deals, and this weakens the Stars in that area by adding another guy who has to approve a trade.
This does mean that to get significant cap room, the Stars will almost be forced to send down Brunnstrom.
I get ithis deal for one reason and one reason only - if there is significant locker room friction. If not, it still makes no sense. It's not an upgrade at D, it's a worse salary cap situation (I believe Sydor has a NMC, not just a NTC) and it doesn't acquire any other assets.

My firs question is: What do you all have against the Averey signing.. The guy is an agitator, but he also scores goals.
Right now Averey is only 2 points behind Modano has a +3 to Modano's +2. Has 56 more pim, but granted that probably 40 of those were within 2 games....
Now I am not REALLY comparing him to Modano, or what Modano has been... But Bad player.... I do question that... Sure he has a bad rep. but really who cares about a rep just look at what he is doing now.
And this whole trade thing doesn't make sense....
We should have traded Boucher for Hatcher if we wanted anchient former players.
well Sydor obviously wants to be here, otherwise he wouldn't have left one of the top teams in the league to come to this mess. This trade is another testament to how well Dallas treats it's players and why the Stars are one of the most desireable teams to play for in the league...
this could work out alright, Sydor raises his game in the playoffs - I don't think anyone's ever questioned that part of his game. Even last year when he came in in the finals against Detroit he played well and my pittsburgh friends had to admit he did a good job after they speant the whole year trasing him.
let's see how this turns out, I have a feeling neither player will make any real impact on his new team so it's pretty much a wash in my opinion.

His waiving his NTC (or NMC) had nothing to do with "how well Dallas treats it's players." Sydor wanted out of Pittsburgh due to playing time and a conflict with Therrien. As we all know, he's been here before too, so it's not as if he just heard through some magical grapevine the Stars were good to players. In fact, Sydor didn't like the way the Stars didn't negotiate on his last contract.

Low blow Kritter, low blow.
I only wanted Boucher traded to create cap space for future deals. This BS deal means every verteran has a NTC/NMC, and Dallas would have to trade/demote a young player to allow future deals.
F U Jackson and Hull. This is terrible. You gotta give it to them. They have fully committed themselves to this team. They can't call up Neal or Fistirc, and trading a young player at this point would be insane.

well I'm getting that from what players have said in the past about the Stars
If I remember correctly some magazine did a poll on where nhl players would most like to play and the Stars were one of the top 5 teams selected.
Interesting. No idea what the Stars are thinking. This is very lopsided in favor of the Pens. Seriously, if Dallas wanted to get rid of Boucher that badly, the Kings probably would have taken him for a 4th and we would have thrown in Sydor-like junk into the deal as well.
This is the worst trade since the team moved to Dallas.
They did nothing to improve the defense, and they acquired a guy whose contract creates the same cap problems. If he really does have a no movement clause, then I'd fire JackHull today. What a stupid move. You swap one spare vet for another, and the one you get can't be waived, traded, or demoted. Way to lock down your roster, morons.
Dallas would have been better off putting Boucher on waivers.
perhaps the most confusing element is that the defense had been playing better lately, so from that perspective it's kind of questionable why they changed it up
I say we give this some time though, it may turn out alright in the end
everyone's pissed off because the team is playing like ****, let's all relax. I have confidence that the team will pull itself togather and put up some wins here
If Sydor plays in Klemm's role from 06-07, or at the most half of the remaining games I'm fine with this trade otherwise it's nothing but a lateral move.
Nothing but a swap overall of mediocre sixth defenseman.

I was trying to be sarcastic. Stupid internet at failing my sarcasm.
I agree that it's a move that essentially backs this team into a corner this year from a cap perspective. I do not like it at all, for a myriad of reasons.
I do want to see how it works out in the long run, but I don't have high hopes.
