McClellan
Babcock
Julien

Carbonneau is not one of the best coaches in the league.

To be fair, Montreal led the league in blocked shots last year and I think a lot of that had to do with Carbonneau instructing his players on how to block shots without leaving their feet. I credit him for this.

As a tactician, however, he's utterly incompetent, a fact which becomes apparent whenever the Habs play against some of the better coached teams around the league (see the 1st round of the 2008 playoffs for a particularly illustrative example of this).

He plays his 3rd and 4th lines way too often. Also, some of his lineup choices are puzzling, to say the least.

i always thought bryan murray was a good coach. it's no surprise to me that ottawa went downhill a bit when he left the bench for the front office.

What is a little shocking is the amount of quality coaches from Saskatchewan: Mike Babcock, Todd McLellan, Dave King(not NHL now), Barry Melrose(ok maybe he isn't good) for example

Its surprising how underrated Renney is. Maybe its being a homer, but he has helped the Rangers become what they have these past 3-4 years, that says something imo.

Wow... one mention in this whole thread of Lemaire? Is it because the Wild are boring? I think that team is the worst in the league without his system. He's like the Brodeur of coaches, it doesn't matter what's in front of him, as long as he's there you're gonna be pretty good.

I'd also throw in Julien, McLennen, Babcock.

Dave Tippett is perhaps the most underrated coach in the NHL. He's in my top 8.

Bruce Boudreau. He is the real thing and as time goes by it will be increasingly clear. He is a great coach.

Tippet or Babcock.

Babcock adapted to the team's current players and basically made the team into a winning machine. He also made McLellan who he is and look at San Jose.

I'm not hating on McLellan when I say this but let's see what he does in May before we deem him a great coach. No doubt he's a really good coach and helped the Wings in whatever way but while San Jose is playing unbelievable right now and possibly better than at any time with Ron Wilson we've seen stories like this before.
