Gunnar I hate to break it to you, but even fellow Devils fan would probably say Richards over Parise.
I love Zach and all and I think he's an excellent player, but Richards is an all around guy and a lot feistier than Parise.
Just because there are other worthy candidates, doesn't mean he wasn't worthy of it either. It's all about leadership and obviously his leadership skills stuck out far more than his other teammates. Who cares that he's young (see Crosby, Lecavalier, etc). He obviously deserved it.
And I'm not saying Zach doesn't deserve to be Captain some day, but he's on a veteran filled team and until they're gone, he probably won't even wear an "A".

Zach Parise is the better finisher, but I pick Mike Richards over him.
Richards is such an allround centerman, can do it all and has the same work ethic that Parise has. Both guys are really awesome.
Even Devils fans would pick Richards over Parise, but when people say things like "Richards and it's not even close" makes it ridiculous. Yeah, most people will probably go with Richards, including me, but to say that Parise isn't close is just plain out braindead.

No, he signed an extension early last year when Smith was captain, well before he would have been able to use the C as a "bargaining chip". Its really a losing argument you are waging.
