Another solid and entertaining period of hockey from the Flames. Great work by all four lines to generate pressure, and to stifle the Avalanche offensive threats. Miikka was amazing yet again, and is showing that he might be making a return to form. I sure hope that's what I'm seeing at any rate. It is of note that the Forwards were incredibly defensively aware again. Which means the team is finally buying into the Defense First gameplan. And it's about time too! But it wasn't all defense as Langkow picked up Giordano's rebound and put it behind Budaj for the first goal of the game. Solid offensive pressure by Giordano and a brilliant play to keep the puck in the zone set this goal up.

The powerplay was yet again, amazing, and unproductive. Zero for 2 that period, 0 for 5 on the game up to then. And you cannot blame the PP units, as both Budaj and the goalposts stood tall and denied the truly valiant efforts. I have to say tho that the BBC line (it's easier than spelling Boyd, Bourque and Cammalleri) on the Powerplay is by far the superior of the two. And Iggy, almost scoring but the post stands in his way. You gotta feel that this special team has an offensive explosion about to happen.

The one penalty kill of the period was executed flawlessly. Great blocking, smart sticks in the passing lanes and aggressive pressure forced the Avalanche PP unit back to their end for the two minutes. Making smart shots to send the puck out of the zone was also muchly in evidence. I noticed players taking a second to look up the ice, which is always a Good Idea.

The Flames are playing a disciplined game and they are sticking to a system, that is what won them the last game and what is contributing to the positives in this game. I hope they recognice this and stick to it.
