My goodness, could this thing really be back on? And why LA?

Maybe he is ramping up interest to have teams compete with each other so he has a better offer from Anaheim? Thats cool with me if LA or anheim shoots their wad and weaens their teams. Who would the Habs have to trade? Lang, Dandy(giving away picks)?

He has often worked out in LA during off season.

very odd... i thought Gainey did the last pitch in September...
sign Sundin and trade some roster players for a solid D ?
That would be my plan...

Great journalism by Lebrun. Name Sundin, then pick about 28 teams that he could go to. As long as Sundin doesn't sign in Nashville or San Jose, he's right!!!!

If we're going to sign Sundin, how much would it be? Maybe 2-3million for the rest of the year?

That pus a lot of players on the outs

Why not do this

(1) Trade Dandenault, Bouillon for Nicklas Wallin
(2) Sign Sundin?

The Cap should work out

then you end up with this

Kovalev-Sundin-AK46
Higgins-Koivu-Tanguay
Lats-Plekanec- SK74
Laraque-Lang-Kosto
Begin-Lapierre

Markov-Komi
Hamerlik-Georges
OB-Wallin
Brisebois

Lang on the 4th line ? Not his place at all. The 4th line need grit. Begin was good in the last games.
If Sundin comes to town then a top 9 forward might have be traded. Unless they move Plekanec or Lang to the wing (highly doubtful).

If Sundin signs here, I don't see that you can break up the lines that already have chemistry

AK-Plekanec-Kovalev have struggled early, but they'll regain their form soon.
Higgins-Koivu-Tanguay have been great

Which leaves Latendresse-Lang-SK, and if you replace Lang with Sundin, he instantly turns SK and Latendresse into the new Antropov and Ponikarovsky, respectively.

Lang drops to the fourth line with Lapierre and Begin/Kostopolous/Laraque.

gainey's not trading cube. give me a break. o'byrne and brisebois in the lineup every night cancels out the effects of sundin with that D pair

I would be really surpised if he came here and it would mean Lang or Plekanec woudl have to go unless one is willing/able to move to the wing

Here's my stupid proposal:

To Florida
Tomas Plekanec
Ryan O'Byrne
Matthieu Dandenault
Steve Begin
2nd Round Pick

To Montreal
JayBo

Then you sign Mats Sundin to take Plekanec's spot. We might have to open up a little cap for in case we need to call up Chipchura, but otherwise, if Florida can pick up all of our cap crap, I'm down

(This proposal is not serious)

I'm not really a hockey expert but from what I heard, it's easier to have a center play winger then a winger play center. Correct me if I'm wrong. And having two centers on the same line can help for face-offs when one is chased.

Anyway - I'm really surprised to hear this. Gainey is usually a man of his word. He said that the Sundin saga is over for the habs. But it's true that Sundin is the best guy available and, aside from some trading to get some cap space, all you would spend is money.

I trust Bob, no matter what his decision it. It's called blind faith.

the players you mention don't get enough money for it to happen. We would still need to dump a few millions to sign Sundin

I didn't check and correct me if I'm wrong, but the 4 players we would give up in your proposal amount approx. to what Bouwmeester gets.

We currently have around $1.7M free to go along with those contracts being moved. I think we'd have close to $2M to sign Sundin.

If it somehow allowed us to fit JBo and Sundin? Are you kidding me?

I want the Cup. We'll figure it out next year. Go all the way.

Anyone else think getting rid of Lang wouldn't be a bad idea?

I really like Lang's game. I'd prefer to see him stay, but Sundin always makes me drool for the simple fact of seeing him wear a Canadiens sweater and skate in the Air Canada Center.

For what he brings to the table he's not worth 4 mil/year.

I mean he makes a little less than Koivu.
