Downie Suspended

Didn't see this anywhere else...

AHL Suspends Steve Downie

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. … The American Hockey League today announced that Norfolk Admirals right wing Steve Downie has been suspended for three (3) games as a result of his actions in a game at Worcester on Nov. 19.

Downie was suspended under the provisions of AHL Rule 29.1 (supplementary discipline).

Downie will miss Norfolk's games tonight (Nov. 21) at Springfield, Saturday (Nov. 22) at Lowell and Wednesday (Nov. 26) vs. Springfield.

It's already being discussed under the trade for Carle thread.

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- Steve Downie changed teams but doesn't appear to have changed his ways.

A noted agitator who was suspended 20 games last season by the NHL, Downie was suspended three games by the American Hockey League on Friday after hitting Kyle McLaren from behind earlier this week.

Playing his sixth game with the Norfolk Admirals on Wednesday, Downie was ejected at 7:22 of the second period after ramming McLaren near the benches. McLaren, a veteran of more than 700 NHL games in the minors from the San Jose Sharks, called the hit "dirty."

"I'm here to play hockey," he told the Worcester Telegram and Gazette. "There's no reason to hit from behind like that, and play dirty. You can play hard, and you can play smart. That's not playing smart or hard. I have no respect for that at all."

you can laugh all you want but i'm sticking to my guns on that trade: i didn't mind acquiring carle, just not while losing downie.

i'd like to see the hit. and, oh yeah, at all the people who have already forgotten downie's got a huge target on his back anyway.

He has a target on his back because he continues to do stupid things. The punch on toronto winger blake, The headshot on mccamond. He came into the league with a rep and so far he has justified that rep. While he gets called for penalties that arn't neccesairly penalties, he rightly gets called for the stupid obvious ones

It's a shame, cause if he could actually control himself enough to avoid doing dumb **** like this he could be a great player.

If he keeps it up though, he'll be a detriment to any team he plays for.

He could be a GOOD player, but at this rate, he's going to be suspended more than Adam Jones. I don't care if he is a young kid and has prior mental issues, its time to put it all together or all of you Downie fans can go watch him in the KHL.

You know what? I'm just going to say what I really feel. The kid's a moron and doesn't have the skating ability to be a useful NHL player. Someone much bigger than him is going to hurt him real bad one day and it will be his fault, and he'll probably deserve it. There, I said it.

I agree. That was total BS that it didnt even draw a penalty. If that were a Flyer doing that hit he would have been ejected from the game and a suspension by Dickbell, oops, I mean Campbell.

Go back and re-check, it was split almost 50/50 and I DEFINITELY was in favor of this trade from the moment it was announced (I've watched Carle play a good bit and have always liked him, even last year).

Hence the reason i said "all the people" not everyone.

Thank you. While you will probably be reviled as a blasphemer here, I couldn't agree more. I remeber the first time I watched him play, I couldn't see what a lot of people here apparently saw in him. As far as I can tell, he had one good play while playing with the Flyers (the blind, between the legs pass to Hartnell last season).

He could be such a great "agitator" with skill. You know like a Domi or Tucker in their prime.

But hey, he's a tough kid. The best of luck to him and he'll probably be back in the big leagues in no time.
