Sign a contract or go away. And that goes for Sundin too.

I hope the NHL looks into a rule where as a UFA has to sign by a certain date to play that year, because this is getting stupid.
I really, really agree. Let's make the deadline Dec 31st and be done with the darned issues! BTW, as for Sundin returning to Toronto, it's possibly but how likely is it? Are the Leafs cup contenders suddenly? I see Minnesota being very possible if they make a trade in the next week or two. Vancouver? They don't seem to need a center now with Demitra back and Wellwood playing good hockey. Anaheim? Could still happen but really doubtful. NYR? They'd have to deal off Gomez first and it would ruin their "youth movement"

That's too late of a date in my opinion. The main focus is directed way too much on these players and takes from the league and what's going on in it. 12 games into the season makes sense, then players can't wait till late December and pick a team according to the win/loss record.

Speaking of Sundin, his agent apparently said today that he'll be back mid-December...interestingly enough just after the Canucks worst road trip of the year. If it were about money for Mats, he'd have signed in Vancouver a few months ago (2 years, 20 million).

I think the Rangers are a possibility, as are the Senators and Canadiens.

I doubt he signs back with Toronto, or with the Wild for that matter.

Then again, does anybody really care?

You guys realize the NHL loves that there is constant chatter about where Sundin and Shanahan will end up, and they probably love that they haven't signed yet. They will not institute some kind of deadline for free agency due to injuries anyway.

Plus, all this talk over Sundin is free publicity for a sport considered to be 4th or less in the U.S.

Rangers would have to move out salary to fit in Sundin. I suppose they could try and deal Prucha but he has become a shadow of the player he was a couple years ago. Ottawa I think is a possibility as they continue to have trouble scoring because they are a 1 line team right now.
Can never count out Montreal but I think right now they are looking for a defenseman.
If he was going back to Toronto I think he would have done it by now.
Cant see him going to Minnesota.

Is it actually news worthy in the US?

Here in Canada, it's front page news...ridiclulous!

Between Niedermayer and Selanne in years past, and Shan-din this year...I bet it's a topic at the next CBA. Not saying it passes, but it will be a topic. Especially with a salary cap.

Count on it.

Sathers' the GM, he's move out what he had to to make it work...and the Rangers would be explosive with Sundin.

It may be a topic Opus, but there is no way anything gets done.

How could an unness restriction get passed throught the NHL and the NHLPA when the only person it benefits are the fans who don't want to hear about Sundin all year.

This is a business and the owners of the teams won't support this, Free Agents are very nice when injuries strike.

The players won't support this, it gives them a chance to sit out all season and jump back in during the playoff hunt if they have the skill to do so but not the desire or strength to do it for an entire season rather then half of one.

Plus, Bettmen won't support this, since it's an oppurtunity for NHL news to be spoken aloud about.

They've already given in on the RFA deadline.

However, I do agree that they'd never go for it with UFAs. They are Unrestricted Free Agents for a reason.

Nov 19th

COURIER-POST ONLINE: Chuck Gormley reports if Brendan Shanahan were to sign with the Philadelphia Flyers today seems a sensible time to do it as the Flyers are in the midst of a four-day layoff.

SPECTOR'S NOTE: Wasn't Shanahan supposed to make his diecision by the end of last week?

Nov 20th,

COMCAST SPORTSNET: Tim Panaccio reports the Philadelphia Flyers are still believed pursuing UFA winger Brendan Shanahan, as are the Chicago Blackhawks and New Jersey Devils. Shanahan's agent, Rick Curran, has returned to the Philadelphia area but said no decision has been made yet on his client's preferred destinations.

SPECTOR'S NOTE: Panaccio also reports Flyers GM Paul Holmgren admitting he'd have to make some moves to afford Shanahan as the Flyers presently have about $600K in available cap space, which won't be enough for Shanahan.

The smart move would have been to sign him Tuesday, and let him practice with the team during the 4-day layoff.

Nodl will be sent down if Shanny is signed. Difference in contracts would be about $500,000.

Dump Lupul, sign Shanny, and hope Giroux or JVR can make the jump next year. I'm running out of patience for Lupul

I don't know what to make of this dreadful start for Lupul, but I remember thinking it was way too early to give him an extension and he's proving that theory right. Holmgren needs to tighten up when it comes to pulling out his cheque book.
