San Jose-Atlanta

i don't know why but i've had this trade in my head for no good reason

to SJS: Garnet Exelby
to ATL: Brad Lukowich

this is really a completely lateral move i'm just wondering if its a decent trade or not

as a sharks follower i really dont think they should be changing too much around but i'm just wondering

Lukowich has been a pleasant surprise for the Sharks

As a Sharks fan, Atlanta is getting hosed in this deal. And the fact is, as much as like Exelby, the Sharks need Lukowich more than they need Exelby. Luko is primarily a defensive defenseman who blocks shots, Exelby is primarily (from what I've seen) an offensive defenseman.. of which the Sharks already have Boyle, Blake, Ehrhoff... and lately.. Vlasic.

And Exelby has been the same for the Thrashers this year, a big bounce back from last year plus he is stepping it up when it comes to leadership in the locker room.

I think the Thrashers would rather move Schnieder before they move Exelby right now.

I don't think either team does this. The Sharks because Lukowich already fits in quite well as Boyle's partner, and Atlanta says no simply because Exelby is a minor step up from Lukowich.

Not only that, but Lukowich is a Stanley Cup winner and has experience, which is something the Sharks need, while Exelby is younger and has a lot more left in him, which is something Atlanta needs.

Personally I think we should trade X while he still looks good.

The Sharks need Lukowich's veteran leadership and Stanley Cup experience. End of story.

I think you have the wrong impression of Exelby.

The few times I've seen him play, he's seemed to be much more of a puck mover, and not that great defensively. I'm not saying he's put up a ton of points, just the impression I've gotten of his style of play.

I could be totally off, as we don't see Atlanta much out here on the West Coast.

LOL ummm, XLB can't pass to save his life. That's why I want him gone. This season he just passes the puck over to his D partner (Hainsey) who makes the outlet pass.

People should just stop thinking San Jose is going to make a trade. Their roster is pretty much set. Wait for an injury to happen before making a proposal with the Sharks involved.

Especially when they're looking to pick up Stanley Cup and Con Smythe winners for nothing.

Exelby: $1.4m (1.725m 09-10; then UFA); cap hit ~$1.4m
Lukowich: $1.65m (signed through 09-10)

San Jose would do this, Atlanta wouldn't.

I think they might have to cap wise when Mitchell comes back

Nope...they'll be good. They've had 500k buffer since the season started and Mitchell's only making 700k and the prorated amount will balance out with the buffer they've saved up so far as far as my calculations go.
