Wow, I didn't realize Girardi was that valuable. Higgins is usually a pretty tempting trading chip...
This time last year he wasn't, but he's really been one of our top d-men night after night. Many of those nights, he's actually been our best. Not to mention he already has 15 points this season, more than any of our current defensemen.
I honestly don't think the value is that far off, but it doesn't make sense for the Rangers. I like Higgins, but we can't afford to give up Girardi at this point. We also have an abundance of forwards we can't seem to get rid of, so Higgins further adds to that problem.
So it's not bad, but we can't do it. Ignore the people who are acting like Girardi is now the next Lidstrom.
The value really isn't that far off, but the Rangers can't make the deal because Girardi is making up for the shotty play of Rozsival and Redden and then some so far this season. I'd love to get Higgins on the Rangers, but if it is at the cost of Girardi, the Rangers can't make the deal, at least not at this point in time.

DONE! I love Girardi, the kid is great, but Higgins and a defensive prospect....sign me up!!! Higgins on a line with Gomez would be quite nice to start a top line.

For many NY fans, especially on this board, it's all about the "what are you doing for me now". Right now, Girardi is playing great, so his current value is of one of the best defenders in the league with unlimited potential. On the other hand, in a year or so when he signs a new larger contract and he's off to slow start, you'll have people begging you to take him.

Last year was kind of an aberration, I guess. He was trying to put his offensive game together and sacrificed some (a lot?) of his defense to do it.
This year it looks like it paid off as he finally has a two way game in which BOTH ways are solid and neither suffers.
It's quite nice. He's slowly becomming a #2 style defenseman. We might never have a true #1, but we'll have 3 #2s in Redden, Staal and Girardi. Better than most teams, if you ask me.

I certainly agree that he has looked very good this year aside from the game in Ottawa the other night. I'd also agree that he could wind up being a very solid #2 in the future (if he isn't already). I just prefer not to rush to judgment until he can put it together for at least 70+ games (I'll give him a buffer of a few mishaps along the way).
The future of our defense looks very bright. Staal, Girardi, MDZ, Sanguinetti, Potter, Sauer are all very good young players. Throw Mara and Redden in the mix and you're in great shape.

Thing is, I'm absolutely shocked we HAVEN'T seen more missteps. Last year he was extremely mediocre on the defensive side, which was such a big difference from the year before.
Of course he needs the full season to really prove it, but he's certainly on his way of doing just that.

I am as well. I was seriously disappointed with him for the latter have of last year, but he's improved by leaps and bounds so far this season. Hopefully he continues on the same course.
I also was pleased to hear Redden compare Dan to Rob Blake. I'll take that from a guy who wasn't even drafted.

Certainly not a bad thing, but the brain trust might decide down the road that we can trade one of them for a good return, which would mean Girardi.
About the proposal: As others have said, the value in this trade isn't bad, but the Rangers simply cannot afford to give up any defencemen at this point, even with a prospect in return. They'd need a creditable and cheap d-man to come the other way.
as tempting as that is girardi is turning into a legit top-pairing two-way defenseman....harder to find those than hard-working 70 point players in their prime
