Rumor: Habs make offer to Sergei Zinovjev

http://hfboards.com/showthread.php?t=576490

Take it for what it's worth. Zinovjev is extremely talented (part of the deadly ZZM line in Russia with Zaripov and Morozov) but he's apparently got attitude problems, doesn't like physical play, and probably doesn't want to play in the AHL either. The Bruins tried many times to bring him over after they drafted him to no avail. In fact he still might be Bruins property...but they drafted him back in 2000 and never signed him so the rights may have expired, I'm not sure.

Seems like a very weird fit if it's true but hey, who knows. We're also apparently going after Rob Schremp

I was looking up info on him and saw that he makes $3.5 mill a year in the KHL so I really don't see this being true as I doubt he'd get anywhere near that in the NHL.

Yeah I figured he'd be among the highest paid in Russia...he's playing on a rich team and he's an elite talent over there (whether that translates to NA talent is another thing). But the OP says he's having a conflict with his coach (which seems true because Zinovjev sat out the beginning of the year for some reason, he's only played 10 games so far) which might prompt him to seek employment elsewhere.

And to correct what I said in the OP, I think he did play with the Bruins/Providence for a short time which obviously means he was signed...not sure how I forgot that. But as to whether they still hold his rights, I've no idea.

Really doesn't look like a Gainey type of move. Especially if he is under Bruin control. I mean....you have those kids doing their best in Hamilton and you take a KHL guy directly to your NHL team? for 3+ million?

Maybe it's just some sort of presure tactic from him against his coach and team.

Zinovjev is good, but Perezhogin >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Zinovjev and it's not even close !!

Bob Gainey should focuse on Perez and Emelin instead of guys like Zinovjev...

And re-signing Sergei to a 12-year contract extension.

If the Bruins already signed him.. (he played for them).. then they probably lost his rights the day he turned 27 or 28 (whatever it was then).

The reason, I think, we own Korneev's rights so long is because he's never been signed. If we had of signed him, maybe he'd be a FA now too.

Small, sure. Attitude problem, seems like it. Russian, well, yeah.

But how do you know he's soft?

i think this is pretty stupid and highly unlikely. but it makes me think of another idea.

where did striet come from? we picked him up from a euro league after nobody wanted him, and now look, he is a decent player who can put up points. if gainey is looking at anyone overseas it should be a Dman. imagine bringing Emelin over to play right now in a top 4 role for the habs! or maybe finding a striet 2.0 burried in a swedish league or something. lol

I believe The Bruins no longer have his rights... but don't quote me on that. They tried to sign him multiply times but he wanted big money (like $3-4 million a year) and wanted a top-6 position in Boston. He had no desire to go to The AHL, he had no desire to work/earn that top-6 spot. He felt like he should be given it because of skill level.

Boston saw him as a rookie that needed to come to camp and earn the money, and the top-6 spot. He saw himself as a vet, that had already earned the money and top-6 minutes.

is this like another Brunnstrom moment? Some guy the Habs want, soon other teams will want him, then come game time he will have a great debut, only to be a bust later on.
What kind of player is he? Which player can you compare or relate him to?

Zinovjev is better than Perezhogin btw... both are good enough for the NHL there's no doubt about that.

Funny you mention debuts. He had an awesome debut with the Bruins in 2003-2004 when they didn't have a 2nd line center. He made a sick pass to Samsonov for a goal and everyone thought we had our 2nd line (after the 700lb. one). Then he disappeared for 9 games, was asked to go to Providence and refused. This was after we waited a long time for him to come over.
Summer of '07, Chiarelli tried to get him to come back but money was too high. Bruins lost his rights on July 1, 2008 I believe.

Zinovjev's a much more known commodity than Brunnstrom. I wouldn't be surprised if others teams had already put out feelers to bring him to NA, just like Morozov. But he's making good money staying at home and playing a less competitive league. Anyway Brunnstrom's played, what, 15 games in North America? Way too soon to call him a bust.

I'm not good for player comparisons so I'll leave that to someone else. Seems like the archetypal Russian stereotype though - slick playmaking skills, good shot, good wheels, but not physical and not willing to pay the price.
