Edmonton/SJ

:

RW Erik Cole
LW Robert Nilsson
D Taylor Chorney

($6M)

:

LW Milan Michalek
RW Mike Grier or Jonathan Cheechoo

($6M)

Sharks add a Stanley Cup winner who can provide much-needed experience and leadership. Nilsson is a crafty young playmaker who is signed cheaply for a little while. He'd look great next to a goal-scorer, either Pavelski or Cheechoo. His defensive play is pretty good, so he'd be a nice fit on a 'third line' too.

The Oilers pick up an enigmatic winger known for injuries early in his career; Michalek is on pace for his worst season since his rookie year. They also add either a checking winger to replace Pisani (put three months) or a scoring winger to play in the top six.

Marleau-Thornton-Setoguchi
Clowe-Pavelski-Cole
Nilsson-Goc-Cheechoo
Shelley-Roenick-Plihal

Penner-Horcoff-Hemsky
Michalek-Cogliano-Gagner
Moreau-Pouliot-Grier
Reddox-Brodziak-Stortini

Why would a team with a record of 18-3-1 want to make a trade involving significant roster players?

I could see them picking up Cole as a rental at the deadline for picks / prospects. At this rate the Oilers could very well be sellers at that time.

For now, if it ain't broke....

Big No from The Sharks, They are not moving roster players the way they are playing... Teams don't move 2 top-9 players when they are playing this way.

Please Cole is not playing well this year. He might be moved at the deadline for picks/prospects.

1. This isn't $6 million going both ways; it is from Edmonton's side, since Chorney is in the AHL so he doesn't count against the cap - however, if the Sharks wanted to call him up, they'd need the cap space to swing it. [See below.]
2. Michalek and Grier are $6,108,333; Michalek and Cheechoo are $7,333,333.
3. Michalek-Cheechoo for Cole-Nilsson-Chorney leaves the Sharks really short on cap space, even considering Mitchell is on LTIR for a while [but it probably won't be for the entire season] ... which really means
4. We're talking about Michalek-Grier for Cole-Nilsson-Chorney ... and I don't see why the Sharks do this.

Nilsson is on pace for something like 12 goals and 25 points.

Cole is having a horrible season (although I still hope he makes comeback).

And, Chorney is a nice prospect who is currently in the AHL.

Why does San Jose do this? They basically get nothing in the deal.

Watch more hockey games. Milan Michalek is turning into one of the more complete players on the Sharks. I don't really get how moving Mike Grier for Erik Cole is exactly gaining much-needed experience. Just how many games did Cole play in the playoff year that the Canes won the Cup? 2?

I'd do Cole and Nilsson for just Michalek, but it doesn't work salary-wise. I just figured since Cheechoo's been underperforming, he'd be the best 'dump'.

notice the common theme in all these replies? that's the only reason for the Sharks to not be involved in any trade talks for any roster players, right now.

the team is on a tear... you'd be stupid to mess with anything on that team right now!
