Chris Higgins (he is god to most people)
Kyle Chipchura (A can't miss prospect according to most people)
Ryan McDonagh (Future good 2-way defencemen)
P.K Subban (Future good offensive defencemen) or Ryan O'Byrne
1st round pick 2009

Cap space ? just waive Dandenault, Begin or Laraque.

: Drrrroooool : !!

Ron Hainsey?

He's even more overapid than Streit...I think he makes like 4.5 a year.

How 'bout this.

Kovalev, Begin, Dandenault, Brisebois, Denis, 3 first round draft picks 2011/2012/2013, Laraque, O'Byrne.

No trade value at all, except for a big salary take for Atlanta. They'd be dumb.

Personally, I'd rather have two really good players at 4+ million than one "elite" one at 8. I like the basic situation we have now, with 4 good lines and a balanced attack, able to exploit ANY weakness on another team.

Seriously, what is it in general with the superstar worship? I suppose it makes sense in sports where one guy can win by himself, but not in hockey IMO. Gretzky never made the LA Kings win. Now, the NHL is a business and some players attract fans who just want to see them play; that's fair enough, but this is Montreal! We want CUPS, not stars!

If I were to spend that much on one player, it would be either a goalie or defenseman, not a forward. More time on the ice, and more effect on the game.

And a lot of the trade proposals on this site seem to forget that salary has become a critical part of the trade valuation of a player, and just not WRT keeping the team under the salary cap. A great player at a premium salary isn't really worth that many assets IMO, because there's a trade off of having that player on your team. Having Malkin signed at $1M per year - that would be some serious trade value. The same player signed at $11M, that's different altogether.

Just my 2c.

Sound like a plausible conversation?
More like:

What about a superstar playing within the structure of a team? Kovalchuk grew up trying to emulate someone who did just that.

Bruins fan here:

I think the OP's proposals were pretty solid. The first one was nice and the second one would definitely be thought about by Atlanta.

If there were prospects included though, I would expect Atlanta to want MaxPac.

I like the new outwardly cranky McPhee much better than the older, sedate McPhee.

Kovalchuk is 25 years old. Who cares if we give up youth and picks?

We need a guy like him very much. As long as Price and Markov and Kostys stay...I could live with any departure...

The odds we draft a player like that are pretty slim... we have to trade for it.

We need a reliable goal scorer. We have set up guys coming out the wazoo - we're at the point where we have guys standing alone in the slot taking beautiful feeds, and looking to pass off...

I say go for it - the sooner the better. What better way to shake off a rough patch and start fresh than a roster shakeup.

I never though I would thanks a Bruins fan
Still dislike the bruins

Anyway, I glad to not get flamed by you all. In all honesty, they problably wouldn't do this trade. In MTL, we are good for rumors and speculation unless we are trading hower best players loke Roy, Turgeon, Leclair nd Ribs.We seem to be on the losing end of trade more often then not since the 90s

yup.. Kovalchuk is one of the 4-5 players in the whole league i'd give up a ton for. The others have no chance of ever being available.

His combination of youth/speed/offense is close to second to none. In an ideal world he'd be a C too but

Traditionally, teams win the cup with high prices superstars and cheap, young depth.

Right now we're going to have expensive depth and no superstars.

I would try to consolidate our assets to get a superstar like Kovalchuk and then bring up MaxPac and D'Ago next year. What are we going to do with all these kids anyway? 4 scoring lines?

I think if you split up the brothers you'll end up losing both eventually.

I don't think he'll go until just hours before the trading deadline of his final year of his contract. If Atlanta can't sign him,he's history. Isn't he a UFA next year?

It's always nice to dream I guess.

We'll definitely have $ to sign him long term at seasons end if we manage to swing a deal with Atlanta.

Would Pittsburgh ever get rid of Malkin?
Probably to a Western Conference team if they did.

I highly doubt Atl will trade Kovalchuk... he's the face of the franchise, they would need "an offer that they couldn't refuse" and John Tavares to think about trading him.

So it won't be this season and probably not the next one... as for Kovalchuk, I doubt he'll re-sign with them soon, he'll probably try to test the market in 2010...

I think a deal could be plausible, but the amount will be really high:
I'm suspecting that Waddel will ask guys like: Higgins, Latendresse McDonagh, Pacioretty, P.K. Subban, O'Byrne, D'Agostini, 1st round pick...If I can predict it should be:

Higgins, Pacioretty, McDonagh, 1st and a 3rd round draft picks

versus

Kovalchuk signed!

So I go with this, Atlanta his in sort of a rebuilt and it appears that Kovalchuk will not sign an extant ion. He is a LW sniper. Atlanta would want an NHL players material + assets for him IMHO. So I have 2 Proposal:

1st one: Higgins(the LW in the deal) Latendresse( young NHL player) Bouillon 2 first round pick in 09/2010. To make cap room, put Dandy on waivers(should be enough)

For Kovalchuk and Exalby

#2:The Kostitsyn Bros. I would Have to say That it's only cause they come has a duo. One goes the other seem to have to go with it. and one first round pick in 2010.

Flame away if you don't like it
I do not like this idea.
