Had to happen eventually, but there doesn't seem to be any particular need for him in Binghamton. More like a salary cap move.

That gives Ottawa about 4 million in cap space now. Maybe a trade is coming?

Actually, I would say Bingo could really use the help. With Nycholat gone and Bell on the big club, they've taken some big hits.

However, overall I agree it's a cap move.

I would think he's just done as an NHL player. The cap savings is about $375 000 so miniscule!

It's true.

Every little bit helps, I guess.

Regardless, hopefully he can still help the organization in a coaching/mentorship role.

maybe they are getting him to play in the AHL instead of staying on the big club and watching, and getting rust?

Hopefully that's the case. I always liked him even though he's old and slow. That Dubinsky KO makes up for everything.

he hasnt been playing. He'll either go to bingo or join the coaching staff in either ottawa or binghamton

Fuhr just pointed that Ottawa is on the hook for Luke regardless because he's over 35. So I guess he's just going to retire or help Bingo.

i'm pretty sure that only applies to multi-year deals.

As far as I knew, Luke was given a two way contract. So by putting him on waivers, he either wants to retire, or the Sens are making cap room... Cough, Shannahan, cough...(I can dream right?)

Here's an article on it:

OTTAWA - The Ottawa Senators have placed Luke Richardson on waivers, a move that could lead to the veteran defenceman's retirement.
-From the TSN article, also on NHL.com

I think that's what the Sens plan on doing. If you read the article above from TSN, it talks about how Richardson has been helping them out, working with the coaching staff, helping to run practices, other little things like that.

He's now an assistant coach with the Senators. team1200 was talking about it on the post-game show.
