GDT quality has gone from ok to bad to one of the worse in the league...

habs425 should do them all, IMO.

just for frame of reference. here is the release on the guy the Caps will have on defense tonight. Tell me now that you are not laughing.

WASHINGTON (TICKER) —The Washington Capitals on Friday signed defensemen Bryan Helmer and recalled him from Hershey of the American Hockey League.

Financial terms were not disclosed.

Helmer, 36, is the Bears captain and is second among team defensemen with eight assists in 21 games this year.

Helmer is a veteran of 134 NHL games and most recently played with the Phoenix Coyotes during the 2003-04 season. He also suited up for the St. Louis Blues and the Vancouver Canucks and has eight goals and 15 assists.

In fairness, the guy does have a point. Imagine if Montreal were playing with a defense composed of Gorges, Brisebois, Dandenault, O'Byrne, Belle and Henry. We'd be worried, too.

That said, I hope it's not too awful to be hoping that the back of Theo's neck is as sunbured after this one as it was after that game two years ago. It was almost therapeutic after having watched him whiff over and over during his lesser moments in Montreal. I was at his last game as a Hab against Carolina, and it was amazing to see just how far he'd fallen.

Anyway - the discussion is moot. The absence of a key player will sometimes stimulate players to take new roles or generally play better (see Malkin last season) but it can also have the reverse effect. It all comes down to the 60 minutes effort both teams will put out.

What I can say is that, the Caps are not particularly hated here - a defeat from the Caps will hurt our morale less then from, say, the Bruins, the Leafs or the Flyers.

Good luck - I could live with a defeat if I see a Great Ovie Show.

How many goals for Ovechkin ?
How feasable would it be to shut him down ?

I think it will be very difficult to shut Ovechkin down tonight. He's been on fire since he came back from Russia and I think tonight's game will be open, considering the fact that the Caps can't rely on such an inexperienced defense core.

So do we play the same trap system we did against the Wings or do we try to take advantage of their injuries and shoot it out?

I'm thinking a heavy forecheck should win the game. Force the inexpericed D to make turn overs and bad outlet passes. Ovechkin can't score if the puck never goes into the Habs zone.... right?

By the way H10H, what are we sacrificing tonight?

lol...I was actually just thinking about what I could do to help the boys win tonight. I think I might go out and get an Apple Pie and sacrifice that.

But there is no relationship between apple pie and the caps. Now if we were playing the Rangers I'd be all for that

The Caps defense line up tonight has 669 NHL games played. Roman Hamrlik and Patrice Brisbois alone have 1,096 and 964.

No pressure to win or anything.

You should be ashamed if you can't win this game. I was really looking forward to this game, but with this lineup its a joke.
Habs make a habit of losing games they should win. Im not holding my breath for this one. Besides, Ovechkin by himself can win you the game.

A lot easier than you might think.

The Caps are simply not the same team without Mike Green. Green is the team's only puck-moving NHL defenseman -- without him in the lineup, the Caps have not been able to maintain offensive zone possession at even strength. Without the puck in the offensive zone, it's pretty hard to score.

The Caps have to hope that Montreal is penalized early and often -- I think that is their only chance to win with this AHL lineup.

I don't like all the confidence shown here. I think it will be a tough game if no one but Ovechkin shows up for Washington.

If the habs can play a similar game to the one they played against the Wings when Ovechkin is on the ice, and capitalize on there relatively inexperience defense early, it should be a win, but then again......

Weak defense and questionable goaltending, this should help our Habs to get the high scoring night we've been long due for. If they work hard and give a 60 minutes effort, there is no reason to lose this one. They showed us in the last games that they can play a tight defense, tonight should not be any different.

GO HABS GO

Am I the only one that has a major problem with this?

Lats should always play with Koivu...or on the 4th line.
I don't think it can work with Lang...who's even slower than Lats
