Gainey got a 2nd and a prospect, who was picked in the 5th round less than a month before, for a 24 year old former 5th round pick who had 9 points in 27 career NHL games and 74 points in 78 career AHL games. That's amazing.
Zidlicky was traded for a 2nd and a prospect picked in the 4th round.
Brad Stuart was traded for a 2nd and a 4th
Hal Gill was traded for a 2nd and a 5th
Richard Zednik was traded for a 2nd
Brent Sopel was traded for a 2nd and a 4th
Biron and Huet were traded for 2nds
For a player that has proven nothing, pretty decent value in my opinion.
Dealing Grabs to Toronto was a bad move but many here will tell you Gainey doesn't make bad moves.
It was a good move. He was the only person not liked in the dressing room and his team mates did not respect him. That's when you deal a player away. That being established, how much can you get for an unproven prospect?? Your high regard for the player's potential isn't enough to land you anything over the top. Yet we still got essentially 2nd and 5th round picks, which in my opinion is not a bad return.
In the a = b = c world of draft picks, you could say Grabovski is worth more than Huet!
