It was a good move. He was the only person not liked in the dressing room and his team mates did not respect him. That's when you deal a player away. That being established, how much can you get for an unproven prospect?? Your high regard for the player's potential isn't enough to land you anything over the top. Yet we still got essentially 2nd and 5th round picks, which in my opinion is not a bad return.
In the a = b = c world of draft picks, you could say Grabovski is worth more than Huet!
I am fine with moving Grabs, the problem lies in where he was moved to. Gainey screwed up moving him to Toronto, you don't hand your direct competition high potential prospects.
To be fair, that has only happened in one out of two games.
What i mean by "players like Grabs", is basically ex-habs seem to own us. We all knew he had a lot of potential, i just simply would not have traded him to a division rival(and one of our biggest rivals of all time!).
Gainey got a 2nd and a prospect, who was picked in the 5th round less than a month before, for a 24 year old former 5th round pick who had 9 points in 27 career NHL games and 74 points in 78 career AHL games. That's amazing.
Didn't we get greg pateryn who was a 3rd round pick at last years draft and a 2nd rounder??
Not really, but he's like Ribeiro was. Top 6 or bust. He's useless in a checking role.
If you think we should still have Garabovski, by definition you must then believe that Plekanec or Koivu should have moved. If it's a choice between those three, I'll take Koivu, Plekanec and the 2nd rounder.
No other team has won as many cups or been so successful as the leafs so show some respect..... geez......
It looks like a shot at the habs though really.
I think you're just reading too much into it, to be honest.
I hate the Leafs as much as the next, but let's be honest here. The Leafs are EASILY one of the most famous pro sports teams. He's right. Sure, he didn't mention Montreal, but do we really need Brian Burke to tell us the Habs are just as famous, if not more?
As far as I'm concerned Grabs didn't want to play for the Habs anymore. You can ***** and whine about sending him to the Leafs. But when you make a trade, you try to obtain as much as possible in return.
The only way I would be upset is if Gainey turned down a better deal. Since that hasn't been proven, I could care less where Grabs was traded.
