If you don't call the Frenchy a frog, you get demoted to the AHL.

I think its pretty funny actually
Whether it's funny or not it does create a bad image for the league.

The NHL as it is right now doesn't have the luxury of already having a strong fan-base and using controversies like this to attract rubberneckers to get a ratings boost.

They are far more concerned with attracting people who will actually want to stay and watch the sport, and they are focusing mostly on families. Stuff like this doesn't help when the image of hockey in the vast majority of the US is that of a gongshow on ice.

Also, how the Hell did I spell "bad" "bid"... The i and the a aren't even near each other...

Can't believe a mod deleted my comment because I said it was refreshing to hear a player just speak the truth.

He should have been fined, but not suspended. I mean come on, how many elbows during a game dont get a suspension. He should probably be fined though.

BTW, here's Dallas owner Tom Hicks on the subject:

Had the league not have suspended him, the Dallas Stars would have. This organization will not tolerate such behavior, especially from a member of our hockey team. We hold our team to a higher standard and will continue to do so.

You think he believes antics like that are what he wants the Dallas Stars to be?

They never had those standards when Belfour was there.

Dion could have answered to Avery ; i understand Avery's frustration ; she told me how bad he is with his stick , when out of the ice ...

Suspension for being a classless moron. It's not because you have a mic in front of you that you can say wtv you want.

I thought it was funny, but doesn't mean it wasn't disrespectful.

If the NHL really wanted to punish Avery, they should have told Dave Tippett that Avery's line had to be on the ice against Phaneuf all night.

For his comments made earlier today.
man ... he is lacking class ...

-he held racist comments against french speaking canadians.

-he played a dirty game, number of hits that were suspended.

-he works hard to get arround the league rules, trying to find new ways to be an ******* on a daily basis ( ie: dancing in front of brodeur , poking fleury .)

-won't drop the gloves when he knows he has to.

- public quotes and attacks , which are directed towards other players , and now my elisha.

- A class act like Modano turned his back on him , but yet avery kept acting like a total jerk.

-destroys the image of the game.

Can you imagine how happy the board of the league will be if someone destroys avery? .....

And yet, I think they like him just the way he is ... credit must go to the dallas stars for steping up and doing the league's ethical work.

Upon further review, seeing how planned the comment was and he very deliberately planned his approach and comments, i agree with the suspension.

He is just a classless metro sexual. I thought they are suppose to be nice and fashion friendly.

But seriously he is killing the stars. His days in Dallas are numbered.

I guess his plan is succeeding, nobody would know who Shawn Avery was if he didn't make stupid comments in the papers.

I would have love to see Iginla and Phaneuf KO him.
exactly, not in the media. avery is a child and needs to grow up. he cant go around barking and expect the NHL to not take a stand

Sign of the times. PC lives here too.

The comments are not in good taste, but bad taste has not been outlawed to my knowledge. Thankfully there are no signs of a Canadian Human Rights Commission assembling yet. But I am sure someone will suggest it.

I sincerely don't think he should have been suspended for those comments

And I'm definitely not an Avery fan

I don't understand how people are defending an idiot like Avery.

He thinks he is bigger than the game, the game is letting him be a multi-millionaire and he is disgracing the game with his antics and comments...this suspension isn't just based on this comment, it is stemming from a long list of issues with Avery and it was only time that this was going to happen.

C'mon man. Avery is a grade 'A' *********.

It's disrespectful to the girl (even if she is a puck bunny), it's disrespectful to the player and it looks very bad on the league and especially the stars to be affiliated with such comments and such an idiot.

I really hope that this guy goes out on the stretcher one of these days...and never returns to the NHL.

He's damned lucky that he got suspended...or Dion might've done it tonight.

Ridiculous suspension... and it would have made the game interesting. No other reason to watch a Stars game these days. And why the hell did they hire Avery if they didn't expect disrespectful antics?
