Whether it's funny or not it does create a bad image for the league.
The NHL as it is right now doesn't have the luxury of already having a strong fan-base and using controversies like this to attract rubberneckers to get a ratings boost.
They are far more concerned with attracting people who will actually want to stay and watch the sport, and they are focusing mostly on families. Stuff like this doesn't help when the image of hockey in the vast majority of the US is that of a gongshow on ice.
Also, how the Hell did I spell "bad" "bid"... The i and the a aren't even near each other...
BTW, here's Dallas owner Tom Hicks on the subject:
Had the league not have suspended him, the Dallas Stars would have. This organization will not tolerate such behavior, especially from a member of our hockey team. We hold our team to a higher standard and will continue to do so.
Can't believe a mod deleted my comment because I said it was refreshing to hear a player just speak the truth.
Sign of the times. PC lives here too.
The comments are not in good taste, but bad taste has not been outlawed to my knowledge. Thankfully there are no signs of a Canadian Human Rights Commission assembling yet. But I am sure someone will suggest it.
I don't understand how people are defending an idiot like Avery.
He thinks he is bigger than the game, the game is letting him be a multi-millionaire and he is disgracing the game with his antics and comments...this suspension isn't just based on this comment, it is stemming from a long list of issues with Avery and it was only time that this was going to happen.
It's disrespectful to the girl (even if she is a puck bunny), it's disrespectful to the player and it looks very bad on the league and especially the stars to be affiliated with such comments and such an idiot.
I really hope that this guy goes out on the stretcher one of these days...and never returns to the NHL.
He's damned lucky that he got suspended...or Dion might've done it tonight.
