At the very least, fine the player.
At least get your **** straight...they are serious about removing unnecessary headshots from the game...not necessarily hitting from behind. There are plenty of ways to make contact with another player from behind in a legal manner. Hitting from behind will never be removed from the game altogether.

I love it, there can't be a winning scenario for the league on these boards. If Upshall gets fined or suspended, people would be *****ing like crazy. Instead, Upshall gets off with nothing, and people are *****ing like crazy.

I do have my '****' straight pal.

The winning scenario is this. If the NHL supports it's refs and it's own personal mandate of removing THAT type of play, then deal with it accordingly. This league (like GKJ said) lacks consistency.

If it was a head shot (like the ref suggested), then explain to me why it's not followed up with further punishment?

I don't fault Weight in the slightest. Maybe the writer meant "brutal" in a way to equate it with a violent, but clean. hit.

Upshall laid a hit.

He plays for the Flyers.

Why are you guys surprised the NHL made the phone call.

Heck, I wouldn't be surprised if the NHL called Holmgrem before every game just to "warn" him.

The NHL has insisted they are serious in stopping...unnecessary headshots.

It's clear that the league recognized the the ref effed up a bit, and has acted accordingly as a result of that realization. The ref screwed up a bit. ***** about that if you want something to ***** about.

The way I understood play...

- Upshall hit the guy from behind, causing his head to hit the glass and cut him...hence the 5 and a game.

...please, correct me if I'm wrong.

Gotcha, haha...sorry if I sounded like I was coming at you at all, I certainly wasn't. I was more or less just venting my feelings about that hit as I remember a lot of people on the main boards saying it was a dirty hit back when it happened.

And yes, I'd also hope that the writer meant brutal as in violent...'cuz it definitely was that, unfortunately.

The rules state that major boarding penalties are to be determined by the ref "based upon the degree of violence of the impact with the boards."

If the ref does decide it is a major "based upon the degree of violence of the impact with the boards," then a game misconduct shall be automatically assessed if there was also an injury to the head or face of the opponent as a result of the play.

i think this is basically colin campbell sticking up for his refs. while it certainly wasnt deserving of a 5+ game misconduct, campbell gave him a call basically to say hey the refs made the call and i have to defend them.

at least thats my take

Exactly.

So then I now ask you this...

If the refs feel a.) it was a hit from behind, and b.) the hit resulting in a head injury (that's a fact)...then based on the facts and the mandate of Campbell/NHL...then Upshall should be fined/suspended.

I have the story right, thanks. Let's agree to disagree.

and I'll agree with you on this one. NHL drops the ball yet again. It's so hard to take Bettman or Campbell serious when the instigator rule remains intact.

Unfortunately, you don't seem to have the story right...so I won't agree to disagree. You're acting like because Upshall hit the guy from behind and the guy's face got cut as a result...it was therefore a headshot. It wasn't a headshot. Are you understanding that aspect?

I'm interested in how this transpired. Does Campbell call the player directly at his discretion? Is there a middle man? Does the team get involved first? A PA rep? Mandatory call because of the ejection?

Think it through first you silly geese.

I am sure that Kovalev did not get a call on his blatant elbow to gagne's head, but i forgot they are just trying to crackdown on ****** players hitting anyone my apologies no one touch Sidney he might start crying and you will get a call from Colin!

The league rightly disagreed with the ref's bull **** call.

What are you having a problem with? Do you want some refs fired over this? Me and cbl will happily agree with you.

How am I being a dick about it? You said the NHL should act on this because of their "own personal mandate of removing THAT type of play." Well, their "personal mandate" has been about removing headshots from the game. So, you've suggested that the NHL should be treating this incident like it was a headshot. But it wasn't one. Or do you think that it was? I'm still not even clear on that. But I guess I'm being a dick.

This is probably close. Refree should be disciplined, not defended.

The ref may very well be spoken to about the crap call, but we'd never hear about it.

At least they didn't add insult to injury (figuratively speaking) by suspending Upshall for what should have been a 2 minute penalty at the most.
