A first round draft pick

now lets be serious here, what would your team give up for a first round draft pick. players, prospects, not picks

Depends on what team the pick is coming from.

Probably someone like Marco Sturm, Chuck Kobasew, or Michael Ryder along with Bostons 1st rounder.

Filip Kuba at the deadline if out of contention and not planning on resigning for a 1st+a prospect (preferably a big winger)

Antoine Vermette for a late first at the draft (umberger deal-type)

dunno what else i would trade that would be worth close to that.

Doesn't it depend on the year and the situation?

The 2008 and 2009 drafts were advertised as high end years so those picks had a different value than other years. The trades would be different. I don't know what 2010 will look like but my hunch is that NHL teams will be trying harder to hold on to their 2009 choices.

First round choices can come in handy at trade deadline time. A playoff bound team can take their middle or lower of the pack pick and trade it for that one player who can help them to the next step.

The trade that still floors me is Junior Ferguson's exchange of a first and second round choice for the likes of Toskala and Mark Bell. Toskala has had some success but it was still a bad trade and an even worse use of high draft choices. The ownership of the Leafs should have fired Ferguson then and there.

Why would BOS move a proven asset off the #1 team in the Eastern conference for a pick that MIGHT turn into an equivelant player in 2013? Especially since the odds of having the 15th pick turn into a significantly better player than the 25th pick is relatively low. Both picks have a low probability of turning into a player that is as good as any of the players you mention.

A team that it out of contention would likely move an contributing player with an expiring contract for a 1st round DP. Maybe a team like STL w/ Tkachuk or a ATL w/ Kozlov would do that type of deal.

Ummm... no. Gross overpayment. Contrary to popular belief on the B's board, these guys actually have SOME value. Especially Sturm and Chuckie.

Hudler will garner a first and third for Detroit when he signs a new contract as an RFA with another team. Detroit is committed to signing Franzen, Zetterberg and Hossa long term and Lidstrom will either play for a dollar next year or they trade Rafalski to allow some of the youngsters on the farm to graduate. Go WINGS !!!!!

Not saying they dont have value. But if Boston has a chance to move up in the draft, and save a bit of cap to sign Krejci/Kess/Thomas, I'd do it. Plus this saves a spot for someone like Sobotka, Marchand, Karsums. I'd prefer to give Ryder because of his contract...
