Ottawa Sun: Rangers looking to trade Roszival or Redden

Quote:
In an attempt to free up some salary cap space, the New York Rangers are reportedly trying to trade one of defensemen Wade Redden or Michal Rozsival.

http://thefourthperiod.com/news/nyr081207.html

As per the fourth period. I couldnt fun the direct source on the Ottawa Sun's website but its not like the fourth period has ever lied or made something up.

Whether they actually do trade one of them this season or not, its good that Sather does actually see the problem and is looking to fix it. This is very positive stuff in my opinion. Hipefully by the off season one of them will be gone.

On a side note- TFP is also reported has Kovalchuk is being heavily shopped right now by Atlanta. I would rather wait till hes a FA but if the right deal comes along...

Yup. I hated the signing of Redden right from day one. I knew it was gonna kill us. I tried to support him as much, as I can. But the guy has gotta go IMO. I doubt, he'll end up being traded though.

And then, when you wake up from your dream, you can make either sunny side up, or scrambled.

You know looking at this off-season prospects. It would be awesome if this team could unload both of them and sign bouwmeester.

Than we would have this next year
Bouwmeester-Staal
Girardi-Potter
Mara- Sangs/Del Zotto/Sauer

Than the following season when Naslund's contract goes off the books and we possibly shed some other salary we could land Kovalchuk. Then this team will be a true contender.

Why is it such a dream if Kovalchuk is being shopped, & Redden might possibly be shopped by Sather right now?

Oooooo! Three unproven second- and third-tier NHLers! Who WOULDN'T jump all over that!

If the Rangers decide to pursue Kovalchuk, they'll be doing so in a bidding war. Want Kovalchuk? Be prepared to start with the name of Staal, or Anisimov, or Del Zotto. Build accordingly from there.

He's referring not to the idea of trading for Kovalchuk; he's referring to the fact Redden, Fritsche, Dawes, and Callahan doesn't get you close to Kovalchuk.

Our two best d-men are Staal and Girardi. All the money at that position is going to Redden and Roszival. I think a number of posters were afraid that this would be the case when these two were signed when the free agent season opened. There were others who were happy about these signings at the time--they wanted the assurance that these experienced vets would bring to the lineup. They are both still good players but they (like Gomez and Drury) are nowhere near worth the contracts they have gotten and I think trading Redden is going to be all but impossible for at least the next 2-3 seasons. It's possible that Roszival could be moved. We would probably have to take some salary back though.

My theory is this: Both were UFAs... we may have overpaid, but not by much... if either of them is moved before their contracts are up, we're essentially turning nothing into something.

On July 1st, September 1st, November 1st, and December 1st there really wasn't a feasible option for that cap space to be put to better use.

If January 1st roles around and Sundin is ready to sign, you can move either of them for really anything. You've now turned a few months of a slightly overpaid UFA defenseman into an asset.

that's pretty much what i felt, didn't like the signing but wanted to give him a chance. but by now you see that he isn't worth his contract, probably not even half of it

ATL would want a deal that would start with either Dubinsky or Staal. I would rather keep Staal over Dubinsky.

I like Dubinsky a lot but we have gomez, drury, Anismov, gratchev, and Fritsche. We have our 1-2 C's filled and I think Anisimov can be a very solid #3. So we're trading at a position of strength.

I like Sang and Del Zotto but I think Del Zotto will be the better player.

I think it would either take something like

Dubinsky, Dawes, and Sang

or

Dubinsky, Dawes, 1st round pick.

I rather keep the 1st round pick and try to use it on a scoring winger since we're already deep in D. Sang and Del Zotto have very similar games.

Redden has Atlanta as one of his three teams.

A couple of things missing.

1. You need to include or Dubinsky or Staal. They're not going to take a bunch of ?'s.

2. Why would they want Redden's contract? They can get a similar deal to what you proposed from another team and they wouldn't have to take a big contract back.

Do teams like ATL even get close to their salary cap?
Edit:This a legitimate question. I'm not trying to be a ****** bag.
