No, this isn't a proposal for Gaborik, it's even more outlandish !
We've been crying for a big center for years now and, with our propspect depth on the wings, I think it's time to make a move for that center: Koivu, Mikko that is.
Here's the proposal.
To Mtl:
M.Koivu
Marc-André Bergeron
Stéphane Veilleux
To Min:
Tomas Plekanec
Chris Higgins
Robert Lang
Weber/Carle
Cap hit: +2.071 millions on MIN's side which should place them a hair under the limit
Now, I know we're giving up 2 centers here, but this proposal is centered around the idea that, after waiving Dandenault, we would be signing Sundin on the 15th of December.
Some of you may also think that this is over-payment for Mikko Koivu, a soft PP specialist and a grinder but, and every Minny fan will tell you, the only way we're getting Koivu is if we overpay. We can afford to give up Higgins with the rise of Dagger and our relative wealth of wingers. MAB may also be a solution for our PP and I don't think he would cost all that much. Finally, Veilleux is a salary dump and can play on our fourth line if anyone gets injured.
I think this also makes sense for Minny since the're solving their offensive woes with Higgins, Lang and Plekanec. They will be able to move Burns back to his normal position. This will also help their poor defense prospect depth.
This is not overpayment... Higgins and Plekeanec won't get you Mikko Koivu... Koivu is signed long term at a very cheap price and he's their franchise player... They'll never trade him.
Lang doesn't have much value because of his salary.
As much as I would like to see Mikko playing in Mtl with his brother... it won't happen... the best chance to see the brothers playing together is if Saku sign in Minny next summer (a very good chance)

Would adding Lats/O'byrne help the deal? Kosto could play on an offensive line until MaxPac is ready next year.
People have also been arguing on the Trade Board that Lang may have the value of a low first/high second( like Toronto's 2010 2d round pick) so I don't think his value is that low.

Maybe at the trade deadline, Lang's value will be that good...
But, really the matter is that Koivu is untouchable, he would only get traded for a better player than him and even that, I'm sure they want to upgrade the players around him, not replacing him...
Think of Markov... would you trade him for Burns and Miettinen... the value's fair... but both of these players can't replace Markov.

I'd think about it hard and long because Burns is one hell of a youg Dman. He's already the No1 Dmen on his team and that's with guys like Johnsson and Schultz in the lineup. I'd probably agree if they added someone like Zidlicky or MAB to the deal.

I love how you toss our players into the deal hoping it will work lol It gives me a good chuckle.
O'Byrne sucks now sure, but he will be great one day. Minnesota is a defensive team, with their best player constantly injured. Why would they give up their Top offense for our offensive which isn't producing, and theirs is? Doesn't make sense IMO.
Nice try though. I liked the Mikko Idea here, just the package didn't entice me to much.
I stopped reading the op after I saw mikko koivu's name get involved. Mikko is going to be in minny for a long time. In fact, its more possible that saku goes to minny than mikko going to montreal just based on the fact that he has ufa status whereas mikko has a ways to go before he gets there.

when has Saku given any indication that he isnt going to re-sign?

I think this gives both team a better lineup, and anyway it's been fun thinking about it so, flame away !!!
I like Mikko Koivu and all...but to trade 3 roster players and a prospect for him is gross overpayment. No way that deal makes us better now or in the future.

Sre you nuts? Compare Higgins and Plakanec's stats the last 2 years to Koivu's...plus you're throwing in Lang who cost a 2nd and a very good prospect. If taht's not overpayment, I don't know what is.
Koivu is having a good start to the season, but looking at his last 2 seasons and career high of 20 goals...it could just be a hot streak. D'agostini is hot, but I doubt we can trade him for Kovalchuk because he is on pace for like 60 gaols.

Plus,Gaborik is their franchise player.
No, Gaborik is not Minnesota's franchise player, not anymore. (Luckily or sadly, depending on the point of view) the Wilds team has not been built around Gaborik. But Mikko on the other hand is perfect fit for their team: reliable center that can produce, but most importantly is effective on defence, can play PP, PK, ES and has the dedication. BTW, his actual nickname in Minnesota is Franchise.
I doubt Mikko will leave Minnesota. Risebrough has stated, that there were plenty of calls for Mikko already last season, but he wasn't willing to take those offers then. After than Mikko has just got better while his contract (3,250 million through 2010-11 season) has just got better. How many (non-rookie) great 2nd line centers are available for that price? And Koivu can even become great/good 1st line center. Mikko is more than "just" his scoring (that has been top notch this season), he is the Mike Richards type centers: teams best offensive center and best defensive center.
The offer that would convince Wilds to trade Mikko would most likely be something that the other team would not accept.
I loled at that. Koivu's value is way more than Gaborik. Plekanec + Higgins won't even be enough to get him. To get Mikko, it would cost one of Pleks/Higgins + McDonagh and we may have to throw in a cheap roster player or prospect or pick.
Still, there's a very good chance he could sign with the Wild...
What's wrong with you guys trying to stir up a fight with absolutely nothing... I guess it's because of the french media...
huh, ok! you quote a guy saying the older brother stated he wants to stay and your conclusion is there's a VERY GOOD chance he'll sign with the Wild...

What makes you think that ?!?! gosh ! saku will never get the respect of some people... Sak's gonna end his carreer in mtl, like it or not

Higgins is a guy that does a lot more than score for the Habs but people constantly include him in trade rumors anyways.
M.Koivu is a very good player(having a great year), I think he is worth more to Minnesota than what the Habs would pay.

So let's not try to get him then.
Every time a player has a good year we see a thread on here that we have to go out and get that player even if it costs half our roster.
