Game 30: Panthers @ Flames, 7:00 MT (Sportsnet West / Fan960)

Florida Panthers: 13-12-3, 3rd in Southeast, 10th in Eastern Conference

@

Calgary Flames: 16-11-2, 2nd in Northwest , 5th in Western Conference

The Flames look bounce back from a tough 4-3 OT loss Wednesday, as they face the Red-hot Florida Panthers at the Pengrowth Saddledome tonight.

This game will be the 1st and only time these clubs meet this regular season. The last time these teams met was on December 11th, 2007, a game which saw the Flames won 2-1 in a shootout, after Jarome Iginla tied the game with 10.2 seconds left in regulation time.

The Panthers are coming off a 2-0 shutout of the Edmonton Oilers last night. Florida goalie Craig Anderson made 41 saves for his 3rd shutout this season. The Panthers have been on a roll recently, winning 5 of their last 6. The Flames on the other hand, are looking to avoid losing 3 games in a row for the first time this season.

FLORIDA

Campbell - Dvorak - Peltonen
Weiss - Frolik - McLean
Matthias - Repik - Tarnasky
Kreps - Stewart - Glass

Skrastins - Bouwmeester
Cullimore - McCabe
Ballard - Boynton

Vokun
Anderson

Injuries:

CALGARY
Rhett Warrener
Jim Vandermeer
Brandon Prust
Wayne Primeau

FLORIDA
David Booth
Rostislav Olesz
Nathan Horton
Richard Zednik
Cory Stillman
Cory Murphy
Bryan Allen

Keys to tonights game:
  • Push the tempo: Florida did play last night in Edmonton, so take advantage of the situation to lay some big hits and get the Panthers tired early on.
  • Get up early: Florida has a .100 win percentage when trailing after the first period. Take control and don't let up.
  • Traffic to the front: Craig Anderson may have faced 41 shots last night, but rarely did the Oilers try and screen him. Let's get some bodies in front to rattle the Florida goaltender.

Time to take advantage of an injured and hopefully tired Panthers club. No need to lose three in a row.

Wow, that's a lot of injuries on that Panthers team. Here's looking for a big win from the home team tonight.

Go Flames!

All I can find is that he has missed the last 6 games with an elbow injury.

You'd probably get more info if you asked on the Panthers board.

Florida's offense looks anemic.

However, their defense looks alot more solid than I initially thought.

Time to take advantage of a beat up team. A ton of key injuries and they played last night. Get on them early and wear them down. Vokoun is a flames killer so it would be huge to get some good chances and hopefully get a lead on him.

Well Florida has definitely improved their D, especially in the Jokinen trade and it is showing. Too bad Horton is out as I wanted to see how he has been playing. After the heart breaker in Detroit (yet an outstanding start) I hope the gang can take it to Florida and get the win.

I am guessing they are going with Anderson after his shut-out performance last night...

All reports have Vokun as the starter tonight.

I would also like to weigh in on the Conroy argument.... Discussion from the last game.

I thin he has been playing great - one of our most well-rounded players.

I just think he plays better with less icetime and less pressure to produce offensively. And he often ends up thrust into that role because we don't really have a legit number one centre. (we just have four excellent second line centres!)

Hopefully this doesn't flare up again - I just wanted to put in my two cents...

Tonight - let's destroy those Panthers. If our boys play the way they did against Detroit, against these guys - Blowout!

TiVo between the pipes tonight. His first start in about two weeks.
Anderson vs. Vancity on Sunday already announced.

To the Horton poster wanting to see him play... a lot of these young kids haved showed more heart and hussle than he has all season. We are not missing him right now,but do need him back in about a week when the losses start to come.

Got tix for tonight... lets hope for a close game. LETS GO PANTHERS! I see a Flames 5-2 W. unfortunately

To bad Prust is out. Wonder if Roy will tangle with Tarnasky or Glass?

Just coming off a roadtrip so hopefully the flames have there legs early in the first period. Need to survive the first twenty and if they can do that they should be successful.

He hurt his arm going into the boards a week or two back. Not sure if it was his shoulder or his elbow, pretty sure it was something with a joint and not a bone, though.

Overall the first period was pretty solid. There was a few slips where the Flames opened up a tad too much for my liking, but they quickly adjusted and found their game again. The were some great hits, and I mean the bone crunching types. Sarich and Perdy were both extra rough on the Panthers. As in call the SPCA kind of rough. Everyone was playing a good defensive game, with a large amount of back checking and quick sticks in the Flames zone.

The Penalty kill was, again, absolute perfection. Miikka being strong, everyone clearing out the front ofthe net, and good solid pressure on the puck. They were also generating offensive chances as well, and that is almost always a good thing. Unless it happens to you. Which directly brings me to the power play. The first chance was actually very very good. Solid possession, lots of bodies in front of the net, and Fantastic pressure. Then there was the second one man advantage. In which Giordano hands the puck to the Panthers Kreps, who makes no mistake on his breakaway and cons Miikka into over committing.

Cammy. You have got to bury those chances! That was the perfect, and I do mean PERFECT setup. You had the empty net, and you miss by what might as well have been a mile. Giordano. I know I already gave you a piece of what for, but seriously. That was pure weaksauce. Glencross was fantastic that period, as were Bourque and Moss. Of course Moss, heck he almost got another one already in the first.
