Mo Cheeks Fired by 76ers

Quote:
The Philadelphia 76ers fired coach Maurice Cheeks on Saturday, sources told ESPN's Stephen A. Smith.

Assistant general manager Tony DiLeo will be the interim head coach for the remainder of the season, the sources said.

Cheeks' deal with the 76ers, who started the season 9-14, was guaranteed through next season.

Bad move. Impatience never wins in sports.

If you watched the Sixers, it was not just they were loosing

They were poorly coached-they had terrible positioning and did not spread teh floor.

Moie Cheeks was never a very good coach. he did good when he let the team run last year and play like a neighborhood pickup game. But this year, he has not been able to use Elton Brand properly, ad he seems lost on the sideline

I actually was thinking he might be gone when I saw him getting interviewed last night...I don't really follow the Sixers, but his body language seemed deflated.

I dont follow basketball at all, but on Daily News Live yesterday they were talking about if they will bring him back next year. I guess they got their answer a little earlier than expected.

Iguodala apparently said last night that they gave up. I don't know if it was in those words, they mentioned it on the radio. I didn't hear about it until someone told me at the Flyers game.

Sam Donellon brings up an interesting point -- Ed Stafanski said Mo got rewarded for the run to the playoffs...not that they thought he was the guy to lead the team.

I didn't realize Mo was the coach for 4 seasons. It is his job to bring the team together, but Mo Cheeks wasn't the one who gave Iguodala $90M and Dalembert like $70B. On Mo Cheeks though, it didn't seem like he used the bench the way it was intended to. Rush, Marshall and Ivy are supposed to be decent specific role players. Now they're bringing the assistant GM down...a guy who hasn't been a head coach at any level in 18 years (in West Germany). I never even heard of Tony DiLeo.

The Sixers are putting a whoopin in the Wizards. Although that hasn't been a major feat this year I head.

Don't follow the Sixers or the NBA very much, but after seeing what Mo wasn't able to accomplish here in Portland I thought he probably wasn't the best choice for the Sixers' head coach. I loved the guy as a player, but he ain't no proffessional quality head coach.

he sounds gooa after the game- dileo- he sounds like he knows teh game and he showed some good things tonite. He seems to be more about match-ups

Stephen A. SMith said on ESPN that Stefanaski and Eddie Jordan- former coach of Wizards- are good freinds and if we get a new coach it will prob be him

I liked Mo. It's always nice to have a former player coach. But, if it was for the best, I guess it had to happen.

I still have faith in the Sixers, Thaddeus Young is my favorite player on that team and if the stars around him shape the hell up, they can make another run.

Yes, it really is.
Avery can say all he wants, as detrimental to the game as humaly possibe..
The NHL is still an all around better "product" than that sham called the NBA.

I was at the game tonight. Sad to see Mo go (haha, Mogo) but apparently its necessary. This team was expected to be better than last years team and it didn't happen. I don't really care so much, because its basketball, but would like to see us do well.

They've got to be doing terribly. The promotions that they're giving away are absurd. I saw a commercial the other day that says you get : 4 All-you-can-eat Tickets, 4 passes to meet the cheerleaders, 4 movie theater passes, and 4 power cards to Dave-n-Busters for $99.00.

26th (out of 30) in the league in attendance. The Sixers haven't drawn at all since the end of the Iverson era and are easily the least popular of the major pro sports teams in Philly. Not all that surprising... this has always been much more a college basketball town than an NBA one.

Except from like 70 until 85, (when Villanova took over by shocking the world) the Sixers had stars and were great to watch.
