Can Vancouver sign Gaborik and Hossa this offseason

Don't remember if it was Strachan or LeBrun on CBC, but it was said that Vancouver would try to trade for/sign Gaborik (friends with Demitra) and then go after Hossa this offseason.

That would mean they would let go of the Sedins. I guess this would make a lot of sense (even cap wise), and I would agree that Hossa is better then the Sedin's but Gaborik is just too injured to my liking.

They could if they don't plan on resigning most of their other players.

This won't happen if Sundin takes the offer thats on the table for next year. $29.2 mil. commited to next season and Hossa/Gaborik will go for $7.5-8 mil. each. I would think that Vancouver would try and use the remainding cap space for a Luongo extension and other areas. Maybe I'm wrong?

It has already been stated that Sundin is only interested in a one year contract.

If we did then both sedins and ohlund wouldnt be re-signed plus it would have to be a 1 year deal for one of them because Luo needs an extension unless gillis thinks cory schneider is ready, then yea we could sign both for long deals. History shows that significant UFAs dont sign in Vancouver so this will not happen. IMO

I'm sure they technically could...but who else would fill out their roster? With the cap likely going down would and the Canucks already having roughly 29 million committed to 10 players, would they really risk close to having 45 million commited to 12 players. For this year, with the salary cap that would only leave about 11 million to fill out the remaining 11 spots. Doesn't seem to bad until you consider that the Canucks would not exact solve their problems, they'd be a one line team with a good top-3 defensive combo and a good goalie. Which is basically where they are now.

Not sure if it exactly helps.

Came out of Strachan's mouth.

Enough said. He apparantly knows what canucks are going to do before Gillis even knows.

Hossa is the only player I would want out of those three. Signing Gaborik would be a nightmare unless it was for cheap which won't happen.

This is so dumb. I think I'm going to go on a quest to get CBC to replace Al Strachan with me.

Every Saturday night I'll spew out random nonsense like "Look for a high salary player to be moved from the Rangers to make room for Sundin" or "The Atlanta Thrashers are going to go after Marian Hossa HARD this offseason" or "Marian Gaborik will play 82 games this season".

support me guys

Vancouver has 29 million commited in salaries next year, and signing gaborik and hossa would bump that to 45 million ish, with about 10 million dollars left if the cap stays the same. you would really have to struggle to keep the sedins in, and you would lose ohlund, and many cheap filler players, but that is doubtful. if that happens, the sedins are gone

with his continuing injury problems and the potential financial issues/cap reduction beyond 2009, do you think there will still be a GM out there gutsy (i'd say crazy) enough to sign Gaborik to a long-term deal for that kind of salary?

no doubt that he's an elite talent, when he plays, or that his agent will likely push for that kind of money, but I wouldn't be surprised if they find that market dried up...

I could see him taking a 1-2 year deal in that range (probably still under 7 million), if he feels like he'll be healthy enough to play and reset his value, but if he wants more years, he'll likely have to settle for less (especially since there's no way Sather could fit him into NY's budget)

Depends if Hossa/Gaborik are looking to make themselves a package deal to save money. Ohlund wont be able to stick around, and after their top line it will be youth dominated.

Gaborik-Demetria-Hossa
Raymond-Hodgson-Wellwood/Bernier
Burrows-Kesler-Hansen
Hordichuk-whoever-whoever

Bieksa-Mitchell
Salo-Edler
O'Brien-Davison

Luongo
Whoever

Maybe one, but certainly not both. They'll both want 8 mil+, so no one (short of maybe the Islanders) can afford to take on that much salary.

And plus it's not worth it. Look at Ottawa; they have a ton of money invested in that all star first line, but they suck because of a lack of depth.

LA will be happy to take the Sedin's off your hands.

Frolov - Kopitar - O'Sullivan

D. Sedin - H. Sedin - Brown

Stoll - Handzus - Moller

Simmonds - Boyle - Purcell

Dustin Brown would give the twins lots of room to operate.

Just Hossa would be great.

Spend the rest re-signing Ohlund and the Twins.

Except Ohlund will probably be looking for a bigger raise than that. In a perfect world it could happen but I'd want just Hossa as Gaborik is too injury prone.
