I think anyone besides a fan of the Rangers takes Cole for 4 million for the rest of the year over Gomez for 7,357,143 for 5 more years AFTER this year.

Wow, looking at the contract even more I would say it is the worst in the league.

The price tag on Gomez (and Briere for that matter) is not the big problem. The big problem is the length of time players like this are being overpaid for. Other teams just don't want to stomach a cap hit like that for that period of time, let alone throw value back the other way.
Thank you.

Don't hate because your team has 4 terrible contracts..

Try again, son.

These Ranger homers are funny as hell, now he is one million overpaid? hahhaa

I like the Rangers but I hated when they signed Gomez. Not a fan, I wouldn't want him on either team.

After reading the above I guess my proposal of:

Gomez/Drury + Sanguenetti + pick
for
Cole and Smid

wont work.

I would like to see a line of Sundin - Naslund - Cole In NY

But Gomez is.

Gomez is on a winning team (top of the Atlantic) and he's a -9? Call me unimpressed. Gomez has an anchor of a contract. 5 more years at $7.3M/yr.
I am no Gomez fan but out of that -9 rating, in two games he was a minus 7 where the whole team sucked, so I don't think using that is very fair. My opinion is Gomez is a very very good 2nd line center but is paid like a 1st line center.

I know he's a UFA at the end of the year, but what would it take to get Betts in Oilers silks?

It seems to me both teams fans hate the deal which is why it just might work.

Here is my view:

For Rangers Fans:

1) you get out from under a horrible contract and free up cap room to sign Sundin.
2) you pick up a pretty good prospect in Schremp who happens to be from the area.
3) you add a pretty good hockey player in Cole for the short term with first right to resign him long term.

For Oiler Fans:

1) the team gets the best player in the deal at a discount price because of his contract.
2) You add a 1st line center who is either a core part of your team or a trade chip but either way its better than losing cole for nothing.

REGARDLESS of Scott Gomez's playing abilities, yes he is a great player and all:

The Oilers are pushed right up to the Cap, and we have an overload of Centers.

Horcoff, Gagner, Cogliano, Brodziak... and a bunch waiting (Nash, etc) or other players that can play center (Schremp, Brule)...

We have no advantage swapping Horcoff for Gomez. I would rather have Horcoff at $2 mill less a year. And we cannot have our top two centers making 13mill with Cogs and Gagner to sign.

Deal does not work for Oilers.

/End

This frees up 3 million as Schremp is in the minors.

fixed it for you. I'd rather have Horcoff for the money. But then again....

Penner-Gomez-Hemsky
Gagner-Horcoff-Cogliano
Moreau-Brodziak-Nilsson
Reddox-MAP-MacIntyre

Rangers fans might not think the value is there, but Gomer's contract pretty much kills any chance of Edmonton aquiring an elite score for the next 5 years. So IMO he has less value than what he's actually worth.

Edmonton doesn't need a playmaker. We've got thousands of players who can pass the puck around and play well defensively. I must say you're not asking for much... but at the same time Schremp is on the team right now and we need someone who scores goals.

Penner-Gomez-Hemsky is a nice first fine, but the way Gagner and Nilson have played as of late... I don't that I'd enjoy watching the 2nd line. Would likely end up being

Nilson-Horcoff-Gagner

3rd line of Moreau-Brodziak-Cogliano would likely be very effective, but what's Edmonton gonna do when Pisani comes back?

Edmonton needs to trade away 1 or 2 of the kids on the kid line to acquire a power forward who can actually score goals.
