Ville Koistanen

Hey guys, I havn't been able to see much NSH games. I like to keep up with the stats and news (hopefully see Cal get called up or Rinne play) but I am curious about Koistanen.

I know some people wouldn't mind if he was in NSH or not. Is it realistic that he is there next season or is he UFA/Europe bound?

What is the defense expected to look like next year? You'd assume Franson will be in the top 6 finally.
Something like Suter, Hamhuis, Weber, Franson, Zanon, ......

Thanks for info.

It's very realistic. I could honestly see us re-signing Zanon (with him now getting in the ballpark of 20 minutes a night and the trust of the coaching staff) and sending VK packing, possibly here in the next few weeks for a forward.

Our defense next year isn't really all that much in flux, though. Assuming Zanon signs a new deal, the only thing that's up in the air is who these guys play with:

Weber-Suter
Hamhuis-Sulzer/Zanon/Klein
Sulzer/Zanon/Klein-Franson/Blum
Sulzer/Zanon/Klein

It's a shame, though. If Koistinen had any more speed, it would help his positional play immensely, and he could probably be a second pairing fixture somewhere in the NHL.

Blum will not spend much time in the AHL. He looked NHL ready during camp.

Don't disagree, but the way Franson is performing in the AHL right now, you have to think he'll get a good look next season. That's going to be a fun battle come training camp.

Anyone has a good prospect review on Franson ??

How he is playing in the A ( except what we see from stats ? ).

Any chance of Franson getting some time in the NHL this year ?

Thx

Franson put on 20 pounds over the summer and he looks like an absolute behemoth on the ice. Problem is, he doesn't use it to full effectiveness, which makes him more like Arnott than Weber. He's also not very fast, so he has to play a more rigid positional game, something he really didn't do in the preseason. He's a good puck-mover who has a booming point shot, and has a very broad offensive skill set for a defenseman. Some work on his positional play and playing more tenacious D (pun intended), he could be a very solid #3-4 defenseman, but not a first pairing guy as we'd all hoped back in 2006-07 when he was a key part of the G-Men's Memorial Cup run.

With our depth on defense, and Poile trying to clear a spot for Sulzer, the odds of Franson seeing NHL time are looking pretty slim at this point, but it's not totally out of the question. He's playing VERY well in Milwaukee right now and could certainly use that undisturbed development time in the AHL.
