Shanahan's contract will be used as a standard now, I'm sure. This is good news for those of us who want Kovalev back on the team I think.

"Only" 4 mil! That's more than any of us here will make in our entire lifetime BTW, please, OH, please Bob don't sign Kovalev. We made the playoff without him, we will make them without him in the future. Of course he's good but only when he wants to. I don't want to read threads all winter long about how he's taking it easy and how we're suppose to wait till playoff to see the real Kovalev. No, no,no. Sorry, i'm not in the mood

ya lazek...you "just" want to make the playoffs...I want to go further and Kovalev is maybe the best playoff peformer right now in the UFA market.

We made it without him but we sure as he'll wouldn't have made it past to B's without him, hay it wasn't the cup but we beat the Bruins so he was worth it just for that. I want him back for a Zednik-Koivu-Kovalev top line.

So with that signing, Detroits' payroll jumps to $45million next season. Should we then be so worried about the self imposed $31million 'cap'? If we even pushed it to $40million, we could possibly sign two UFA's as well as pay our own RFA's what they're worth.

I just made it for fun, with few ufa's who have been signed in the last few weeks for a comparison with Kovalev (even if I know many posters here don't like stats ):

Recchy
age:36, 3 millions game goal assist points p/game
5 years stats 392 123 236 359 0,92

Samsonov
age:25, 3,85 millions
5 years stats 299 99 142 241 0,81

Shanahan
age:35, 4 millions
5 years stats 399 164 186 350 0,88

Kovalev
age: 31 ??
5 years stats 384 153 206 349 0,91

I think these new signing could help fixing the new values of UFA's, and hopefully raise our chances to see Kovalev in Montreal. Comparing to players in the same ppg range, Gainey's offer (4,25 millions) is really fair.

I know we did the playoff without him, but chemistry with Koivu and Zednik was so perfect during the playoffs... Just imagine a season :gman:

I used to agree with your opinion, but he does add spark to our offense, even if he only puts up 25 goals or so. He gives us depth and maybe they could even slip Kostsitsyn in there on the top line with them...

Good post, nice stats.
But nobody on the list have a mix of size, young age and talent like Kovalev.
Shanahan is big but he's getting old.
Kovalev will probably sign a contract between 4.5 and 5 millions per year IMO.

Nice avatar by the way :lol I think you used a cat + a penguin + a lion or tiger, right?

Yeah, you have a good point! At least, were getting a better idea of his true value with these signings.

Thanks for the comments on the avatar! I did'nt do it myself, I found it on a ppt send by a friend where there was a bunch of mixed-animals (and this one was not the weirdest, just imagine a mouse mixed with a hummingbird and a wolve )

I get the feeling that Pallfy may regret not signing the offer from the Kings when he had the chance. I wonder if the offer is still on the table?

I am still hoping Kovalev get's signed to play here. I want # 27 inked to a 3 year contract with a club option on the fourth or auto <- if he scores over 260 points or something.

If the habs don't sign Kovalev, or any other UFA, how much will be the HABS payroll next year?

Well, maybe not 260.. But some higher expectations hopefully to give incentive to play. Actually it would be more interesting to see a playoff series # (I.E. 8 series in 3 years).. .But because he's a player, he'd be more pointts driven. I know 85 points is no easy task to match, but I feel playing top minutes with Koivu and possibly Ribs on the PP, he could potentially do it...
