Vanek now in roster roulette
We'll have to watch the warmup closely tonight to see who's in the lineup when the Sabres meet the Penguins. Here's what I gleaned from the morning skate:

1). Thomas Vanek is iffy. Seemed to be favoring his leg, was off the ice quick and not around when the media was in the dressing room, a rarity.

Kaleta out with a head/neck injury http://buffalonews.typepad.com/sabres/

Quote:
Patrick Kaleta was absent from the morning skate today and will miss tonight's game against Nashville with what coach Lindy Ruff termed a "head/neck" injury suffered on the heavy hit he took early in the third period Saturday from Montreal's Andrei Kostitsyn. Ruff made it sound like Kaleta will be in the week-to-week mode.

Lydman questionable for thursday's Florida game.
Quote:
Lydman, who was struck by a shot in Monday's loss to Nashville, was unable to take part in practice today in HSBC Arena before the team flew to Fort Lauderdale. Captain Craig Rivet remains questionable with an upper-body ailment suffered Saturday in Montreal.
http://www.buffalonews.com/sports/story/512182.html

Ruff says that Mike Weber has unspecified medical issues. If a call up is made it'll like be Butler or Funk.

Derek Roy (back spasms), Toni Lydman (leg) and Andrew Peters (abdominal strain) all sat out practice with ailments that cropped up from Monday’s game but Ruff said he’s only concerned about Peters missing time. Patrick Kaleta (upper body) and Tim Connolly (rib) are not expected to be on the trip, which wraps up Monday in Pittsburgh.

Per TBN :

http://www.buffalonews.com/489/story/520780.html

"Tim Connolly, who has been out since Nov. 15 because of a broken rib, isn’t expected to practice for at least two more weeks. The center, who is skating on his own, has missed 22 of the Sabres’ 28 games. "

I won't watch a game next year if we re-sign him.

Rivet out for "a while"
http://www.buffalonews.com/489/story/521805.html
Quote:
Lydman was reunited with longtime former partner Tallinder because captain Craig Rivet was again out due to his undisclosed upper body injury. Jaroslav Spacek and Andrej Sekera, partners for much of the season, were put back together as well but were on the ice for both Toronto goals. Nathan Paetsch skated with Teppo Numminen.

That’s how the defense may look for a while because Ruff said Rivet’s injury is simply causing him too much trouble. Rivet will certainly miss tonight’s game in New Jersey and probably a few more after that.

“It flared up again,” Ruff said. “He’s going to need some time. He can’t play his game. It’s affecting his game so we’ve got to rehab him for a while.”

A bit more on Rivet:

http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=2598...=headlines_nhl

Quote:
Sabres head coach Lindy Ruff said it was not a day-to-day injury and that Rivet would be re-evaluated in two weeks. He also said that if he is not cleared to play by doctors in two weeks, it will be another two weeks before he is evaluated again.
the good news, though:

Quote:
Forward Pat Kaleta could also return to the lineup sometime this week after being sidelined since November 29 with a neck injury.

Bleh.

I hope they call up a defenseman and give Teppo some rest already.

2 weeks for a shoulder injury? I wonder what the diagnosis (or misdiagnosis) is...

So Gerbe will be sent down. No reason for the Sabres to pay him NHL salary when he's hurt.

Here's the link:
http://www.buffalonews.com/sports/story/524811.html

Seeing as C-Mac is replacing Gerbe on the wing, I'm assuming the lines will look like this:

Vanek-Hecht-Pominville
MacArthur-Roy-Stafford
Kotalik-Mair-Afinogenov
Paille-Gaustad-Kaleta

ugh, MacArthur.... just when Roy was getting going. Gerbe injury is a bummer, atleast he'll only miss 2-3 games.

Definitely a bummer, but...

MacArthur will be going back to wing, with a decent scoring center. I think he can get his scoring touch from the beginning of the year back.

Roy was getting going even before Gerbe came up (and his winger at that time was none other than Clarke MacArthur). Gerbe hasn't been all that much better than CMac on that line, to be honest.

You can't send down a guy when he gets hurt in the NHL.

This is surprising to me since Gerbe said he was fine after the NJ game...

I would imagine the fact Lindy doesn't move either Kotalik or Afinogenov up off the line with Mair in the wake of Gerbe's injury probably doesn't sit well with either of them. I like the fourth line alot, but I don't see why Gaustad hasn't earned a bump up to third line center.

I'm not disagreeing with you, I think Goose has earned a promotion too. I just figured that Lindy would try to keep the lines as intact as humanly possible.
