I was listening to the Team 1200 on the way into work this morning when they aired a live interview with Corey Locke and they asked him what was his hockey status for the upcoming year. "I have not received an offer from the Canadiens so I'm still a 67 I guess." Locke said. However, he did state that his agent and Bob Gainey have been in contact after the camp ended.
In short he sounded kind of dejected by not having a contract hashed out with the Habs yet. He also sounded very skeptical of the WHA. Hamilton drafted his rights in the proposed league but neither he nor his agent has been in contact with anybody from the nameless franchise.
He reiterated from earlier interviews that Brian Kilrea is saving an "over-ager" roster spot for him if he does decide to return to the 67's for one more season. But as radio hosts, Steve Lloyd and Dave Gross agreed after the inteview concluded, that a return to the OHL would likely not help his progress in developing into a better professional hockey player down the road.
The next caller, a regular called "Sleepy" Jeff, eluded to rumors on the street that the reason why he is not signed to a contract is because he is asking for 2nd rounder money even though he was drafted in the 4th. Sounds plausable but still, it's just a rumor.
Bottom line is that I hope the Habs sign him soon and get him in the Bulldog's roster in time for next year. That would be the best case senario both both sides. if he goes back to the 67's, he may regress or even worse, holdout and try to go back into the draft.
Sleepy Jeff is a moron. I hate it when he calls in. I've never heard him say anything intelligent... anyway, I'm sure Locke will play in Hamilton next season. He isn't the only prospect that hasn't been offered a contract yet.
Yeah theres AK 47, I think hes the priority now. Oh and I also saw AK47 strolling outside theBell Centre with his translator yesterday. I sais hello and he seemed courteous despite the language berrier. Nothing else to speculate.
I don't expect Locke to be back in Ottawa next season. He has topped out in junior hockey and time for him to play with the bigger boys and see how he does in the AHL. I imagine his positive performance at camp has the Habs interested in getting him to Hamilton this fall. I am sure it is just timing of getting all these contracts done, as there are still some key RFA's to sign, two guys in arbitration, some big name Russian UFA that they are still trying to sign, and a few other juniors that may be signed over the summer. I wouldn't read too much into the fact a deal is not done yet.
As for the poster that saw AK-47 still in Montreal. Interesting news since his CSKA team is already playing some games in Finland or something like that and I thought he was supposed to join them right after camp. Could bode well that negotiations are going on between him and Montreal. Keeping fingers crossed!!
It seems to me, based on the rumour, that, possibly, it is Locke who does not want to play with the bulldogs next year and not the other way around.
He was drafted in the 4th round therfore why would he get 2nd round money. This might yet be another case of a player agents looking out for his own best interest and not that of the player he represents.
The best interest for both parties is to get this resolved and have Locke in a Bulldogs jersey this year.
