I don't think that is an accurate assessment of where Ilya is right now.

When Ovechkin got his big contract, the first thing Ilya did was visit DW's office and say "Did you see what Ovy got?"

He wants to stay in Atlanta, he just needs to see the team make a more convincing case that they can be a long term winner.

He or his agent have only said, from what I have seen, is that they will honor their contract with Atlanta(not request a trade) and revisit the situation when the time is right.

Some people around here would say, "oh, Kovalchuk should go sign with Detroit or some other Cup contending team for ultra-cheap so he can compete for the Stanley Cup which he'll never do in Atlanta..."

And then, they would end their statement with a bunch of !!!!!1111 or something like that. Or maybe a FTW thrown in there.

Kovalchuk is the Thrashers...hes going no where. Thanks.

i think i must have missed the part where this "deal" would be only be remotely considered from Ottawa's point of view if Kovalchuk were signed to a long term (5 or 6 year) deal in the 7-8 million range.

nobody here is suggesting with a straight face that Spezza be dealt for UFA are they?
i dont know if id do it even if IK was signed to that long term deal.

As for the other one:

Spezza, Lee, and SJ 1st
for
Bogosian and 1st

That's a joke right?

Kovalchuk has another year after this and is a significantly better player in my opinion.

As for the other deal, I know others won't like it but it gives us a potential franchise defenceman, frees up $7 million in cap-space and gives us another lottery pick (hopefully top-5-10) in addition to ours, the position of which would only be improved by the subtraction of Spezza.

well, unless you see TSN offering Mr. McCleary a deal, bills have to be paid.

Depends on what Ottawa thinks they can do with the $7M cap hit. If they are confident they can sign 1 or 2 quality players, then they might come out aheadat least listen to the offer (although i think they'd ask for more). If they use it to say, buy Sean Avery off waivers, then yes the deal does suck for them

Does not mean I have to visit it.

I agree, it is a terrible deal. Rationalizing it by saying we would have $7M in cap space does not do it for me. Spezza isn't a "salary dump" so we can free up space. We would want value back for him, and if we free up space in doing so, even better, but there is no way Murray would even consider an offer like this.

If Ottawa can trade Spezza plus a bit more for Kovalchuck would give Ottawa 2 scoring lines. Fisher could move up with Heatly and Alfie and Vermette can play with Kovalchuck. That would give them two scoring lines. They still need a puck moving dman though.
