Los Angeles @ Buffalo - 12/19/08 - 4:30PM

.

Los Angeles Kings
(13-12-6, 32 pts)

VS.

Buffalo Sabres
(15-13-3, 33 pts)

4:30PM (PST) @ HSBC Arena Buffalo, NY

TV Broadcast: FS-W (Away), MSG-B (Home)
Radio Broadcast: KTLK 1150 AM, XM 206

GAME PREIVEW
Traditionally one of the better home teams in the NHL, the Buffalo Sabres are hoping to turn things around there. Facing the Los Angeles Kings could be a start.

The Sabres look to avoid a third straight loss at HSBC Arena while trying to continue their home dominance over the Kings on Friday night.

Buffalo (15-13-3) lost 5-3 to New Jersey at home on Wednesday to split a home-and-home set with the Devils. The loss dropped the Sabres to 8-8-1 in western New York, where they have lost have lost six of their last nine contests.

The Sabres, who haven't lost more than 15 home games in each of their last four seasons, have been outscored 52-43 there this season.

"When we come home we try to do a little bit too much and that's when you turn the puck over," Buffalo forward Jason Pominville told the Sabres' official Web site.

A visit from the Kings (13-12-6) could help Buffalo improve its play at home, at least for one night. Though Los Angeles won 8-2 on Dec. 6, 2007 in the teams' most recent meeting, the Sabres have won two in a row and seven of the last eight against the Kings on home ice.

The Sabres hope for a better effort than they put forth against the Devils. Drew Stafford, Patrick Kaleta and Paul Gaustad scored for Buffalo, which lost for the second time in six games since losing three in row.

"We need to simplify our game," Gaustad said. "We stick to our game of hard hockey, we're a tough team to beat. We made mistakes we shouldn't have."

Stafford has scored in two straight games and three of his last four, while Derek Roy extended his points streak to seven games with an assist versus the Devils.

Roy has two goals and five assists during his run.

Ryan Miller made 25 saves versus New Jersey, but suffered his second straight loss. Miller is 13-9-2 with a 2.61 goals-against average this season and 1-1-0 with a 3.38 GAA against Los Angeles. He allowed four goals in the most recent loss to the Kings.

Dustin Brown had two goals and an assist in that contest for Los Angeles, and added one of each in a 3-2 overtime loss to the New York Rangers on Thursday as the Kings concluded a 2-0-2 homestand.

It was the 12th goal of the season for Brown, who played his 300th NHL game. He has four goals and three assists in his last four contests.

Jason LaBarbera made 27 saves, and lost his third straight contest to fall to 5-7-4 with a 2.71 GAA in 2008-09.

LaBarbera, who should get more work as Erik Ersberg recovers from a groin injury sustained Monday in a 3-2 shootout loss to San Jose, has never faced Buffalo.

Should be an interesting competitive game. I look forward to it. It really all depends on the goaltending. If we play Quick we have a chance, if we play Labs we need a miracle and/or the Sabres to play a very poor game. It is all up to the defense and how many shots they allow. GO KINGS!

The last time the Kings played Buffalo they only allowed 17 shots and won 8-2.......ironically that game was Jonathan Quick's 1st NHL start and only NHL win.

Precisely the reason I am crossing my fingers for Quick. Murray said it was possible, I hope he makes good on that and puts him in goal. I would rather a rookie out there learning and making mistakes than a veteran flopping and flailing like an idiot...

These two teams seem to only be able to play in bloodbaths. Lets hope the blood bath is in our favor tonight.

But remember what happened in that 10-1 beatdown?

Our "starter" Garon got destroyed, he was then pulled in favor of the young inexperienced call up Adam Hauser. The Sabres then went on end Adam's NHL career.

Hopefully a similar scenario doesn't unfold tonight. Although, with the way JLB has been playing, I think there's a relatively good chance we could end up seeing Quick before the night is over.

I just read that Ersberg is out till late Jan??? Is this true or a guesstimation??? I thought he was ony out for 2 weeks?? If he is out till late Jan, whatever playoff hopes we had should be flushed down the toilet if JLB gets the bulked of the starts.. Is it too early to look forward to next seasons training camp???

"Out until at least January," is according to CBS Sportsline.

If he comes back right at the beginning of January, that would mean his recovery was about two weeks, as expected.

I more of a Kings fan than a Sabres fan(I follow both teams, Buffalo's the hometown team), so I want the Kings to win this one.

7-4 Kings, I'll predict.

Groin injury. I don't rely on any of the estimates on his return.

Wow.. a Kings fan in Buffalo? I have a lot of friends back there and I went to the Winter Classic last year. They couldn't believe that a guy from California would go that far to see a hockey game. Believe it or not, I saw a Ducks fan from California as well and I was nice enough to give his cold ass my extra set of gloves. The moron didn't even bring a winter coat and wore jeans to the game.

I was at the game last year at Staples when the Kings won 8-2 and I remember seeing Jon Quick and Zeiler at the Lexus club after the game. I pray Quick gets the start tonight. It seems like it is always a barn burner between these two teams for some reason. I'm hoping the Kings play good defensively tonight.

The Kings just have to score more goals than the opposite team and that is it...as someone (Cap R and others) so beautifully explained in the last post game thread.

.. and as so many other has stated in posts and threads earlier that Labs is Labs so forget him just outscore the other team.

So lets hope that will happen. ...but it would be nice to see if Quick has it.

I'm not surprised. And with that, I don't expect the team to win with him in net.
