Because he has shown that he deserves it. Some nights, he has been our best defenseman. He has had two bad games here, and one he was injured in. Frankly, everyone needs to get off this guys case -- Downie won't amount to anything in the NHL and Carle is a terrific pickup.

Would you expect him to develop sitting on the bench? He's playing that amount, because he upgrades the puck movement of the Flyers defense. And because he's highly talented and skilled.

I totally agree. Although Downie could be a decent 3rd liner, if he gets his head on straight.

He turned 24 in September. His next game will be his 178th career NHL game; that's a little over two full seasons.

So what's in his future is an unknown.

Some guys turn themselves into solid defensemen (check out the first six years of this guy's career), and others don't.

Carle is not a top 2 d-man. But he is a solid puck moving #3 who when paired with someone like VCanane who will stay at home, will be able to fit in perfectly. How Stevens fails to switch teh pairings is beyond me....

Carle is what he is a offensive minded defenseman. He is still young and he is still going to make mistakes. Yes he was bad last night but to a man most everyone was bad on the Flyers. I think pairing him with Ryan Parent when he gets back would be a pretty good middle pairing. Of course this is when Parent is back 100 percent which we hope wont be too long after he gets back.

Really, John Stevens seems to agree. As does Holmgren who traded for him.

When Parent is back to 100%, it's unclear whether he'll even be on the roster.

maybe not much this season, because he'll be out of game shape, but next year and beyond he will be
