3 empty netters. first even strength. second 1 man short. third 2 men short.

Austria moves up from 1B with Switzerland from 1A. See you in Saskatchewan!

all we need is germany staying in WJC. wouldn't it be the first time ever that all three nations take part at WJC at the same time?

Got a few questions here. Switzerland now qualifies for the WJC next year right? So does that mean the last place team in this year's WJC doesn't qualify for next years tourny? And by looking at boxscores Estonia got dominated in all their games so are they moving down a division?

EDIT- NVM I now see that both Austria and Switzerland qualify for next years WJC

the 9th and 10th place teams in this year's WJC get relegated.

At the end of the round robin, the bottom two teams in each of the two WJC groups get separated and play each other for 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th places.

In Group 1A and 1B (not to be confused with the WJC groups), the first place team moves up to the WJC and the last (6th) place team moves down to Group 2.

For at least the last 2 years, the top 6 teams have been Canada, Sweden, Finland, Czech, Russia and USA. There are three of those in each group again this year. The other four are:

Germany
Latvia
Kazakhstan
Slovakia

I would say there is 95% chance that the two relegated teams come from those four teams.

isnt it the bottom 2 teams that get relegated? to make room for the new 2 teams?

The last two teams at the WJC are relegated to Div-I and are replaced by the winners of the div-1 torunaments (Switzerland and Austria). The last teams of the div-I tournaments (Estonia and Hungary) play div-II next year.

Okay since i attended the game let me try to describe the game.

First of all congratulations to Austria with a well-deserved win. They were more aggresive overall. We didn't have the luck either(an own goal and LOTS of very close ones)

With that said, there was primarily 1 reason why we didn't win today: Our coach Olaf Eller for two reasons.

#1
He played our key players way too hard through the tournament in general especially tonight. I think Lars Eller and Philip Larsen played 35+ minutes. seriously. They didn't have enough juice left in the third period.

#2
STUPID coaching. Being behind 5-3 with 3 minutes again we of course had to pull the goalie. There was a faceoff in Austria's zone BUT Olaf Eller decides to pull the goalie even BEFORE the faceoff has been taken. I said to the people around me: This is going to go wrong. And guess what? it did.
THIS WASN'T ENOUGH!!
Seconds later there was a new faceoff in the Austrian zone, and he did the EXACT same thing, and it gave the same result
WTF? I've never seen something so rediculous before. Trust me, Olaf Eller is done as the u20 coach.

Best defenseman of the tournament should IMO have been Philip Larsen. He's so calm and must have played 40 minutes tonight. Again.

It will go to Austria's Stefan Ulmer most likely. He's best scorer of the tournament after all.

On another note Japan will be one of the two teams promoted to division one next year after beating Lithuania 5-4. Congrats to the Japanese.

Awesome to see Austria advance. It is only the third or fourth time they are playing the A-Pool championship. First time since Vanek's U20 days.

What I dont understand is that Ulmer is on no top prospect list. He is doing so well for over 1.5 seasons now. His small frame is most likely hurting him the most, I just hope he gets picked up in later rounds of the draft this year.

Yes, Ulmer is defnately underrated.

ulmer is a great offensive d-man with some remarkable playmaking ability, good vision and a great shot. in short: he provides everything except size.

which, unfortunately, seems to be what every team is looking for in young Dmen these days.

Just to confirm, Ulmer is undrafted right??? Would love for the Leafs to pick up a talented dman in late rounds and the fact he is Austrian put it over the top.

sure he is. he's eligible in 09 for the first time.

and somehow, his size, his skills...could he be compared to meech? it's hard for undersized Ds to make the NHL unless they have exceptional skills and i really mean exceptional.

Ulmer sounds a bit like Kristopher Berglund after last year's WJC...he went in the 5th round in last year's draft.
