Mirtle: M. Staal top Defensive Dman so far in the League

http://www.fromtherink.com/2008/12/2...y-award-update

Quote:
A look at the top defensive defencemen in the NHL so far this season, based on even strength and shorthanded goals against and quality of competition. Players had to play a significant role on the penalty kill to qualify.
Rangers on the list?

1. Staal
3. Mara
20. Girardi

Staal/Girardi 4 lyfe. Discuss.

I was just going to post this. His "Langway award" is a fictional defensive-stat ranking based on ice time, quality of competition faced, and goals against at ES and PK.

If you doubt his formula, look at last season's final results: http://mirtle.blogspot.com/2008/04/2...way-award.html

Makes you wonder why they give Rosi 20+ minutes a game when they could just deploy Staal and Mara.

I like them much better anyway.

Interesting article. No denying that Staal has been absolutely rock solid defensively, but I'm incredibly surprised to see Mara at #3.

It been clear that he is the teams best D man. This guy was born to defend and spent all those formative years trying defend big bro in the backyard...

Mara at 3 huh?

Do you get a boost if you have decent stats while playing with Kalinin?

Thats what got me. But when I saw him at 3 it got me thinking, I haven't noticed Mara much at all this year, and when you don't notice defencemen, that means they are doing their job right.

With Mara's new contract, he is worth every cent. When it finally sunk in that he won't contribute offensively and just do his job as our own bear on skates, it's hard not to appreciate his effort. It's alot easier to like Mara on this team, with our share of horrid contracts too. Players actually earning their salary seems to be a dying breed in New York.

That Staal was #1 was a surprise, but there's no denying he's been awesome. He's had his share of bad plays, but they have been few and far between. And Girardi... what else can be said? He has everything you like in a defensive D-man. He can even pot in a point here and there too. His wrist shot is sneaky and good at finding the net through traffic. He has also made some boneheaded plays, but as for the rest, they have also been few.

Now, as for Redden, Rozsival and Kalinin... why can't they be like the rest of them?

Unfortunately, I don't see Mara staying with the team. He's going to get paid elsewhere after a very good year.

Hopefully some of his comments after re-signing actually have some truth and he'll get re-signed again for a reasonable contract.

Anyway, IIRC behindthenet has some stats showing the 'quality' of the goaltender based off the quality of the shots and an adjusted GAA, so I'd be curious to see how well some of our defensemen would look if the stats were adjusted for an average goalie.

Could be, but...

I don't think he made any implications that he was going to stay for more than just this year. He signed for less probably because he didn't have the best of seasons last year, and wanted to use this season to establish his value as a UFA. I know he could have gotten a bit more elsewhere, but I think there is a reason he signed for only a year. Guess it all depends on the success of the team this year. If we don't make the playoffs I don't see him sticking around

Dude, he got better offers elsewhere, he said so, but he also said he absolutely loved playing for the Rangers, that's why he stayed here. Plus once Kalinin is gone at the end of the year, and hopefully Rozy is traded, we can sign Mara long-term.

Lock up Staal long term, Girardi long term, Mara....

There's not enough room on the back end for long term deals at this point, especially if you want to incorporate a Sangs or DelZ in the not so distant future. No wiggle room, and we know how much Sather likes to wiggle

Duncan Keith and Brent Seabrook are both pretty awesome players. Sad, instead of those two players we drafted Lee Falardeau and none other than Hugh Jessiman. eff you hindsight!

Staal-UFA not named Rosival or Redden
Keith-Seabrook
Mara-Girardi

I just wonder if you're going to get the level of play from him if you do, but what the hell, I'm down to give it a try!

Ottawa offered Mara a long term deal last summer.

Kalinin should be sent to the KHL.His agent has those connections.

I think we will see rozsival's play get better and better as the season goes on, therefore i dont see mara or kalinin being brought back unless sather can trade either redden or rozsival.

Well, Staal already plays 20+ minutes, giving him 30+ might not be a great idea

Mara has been one of my favorite Rangers for 2 years now. I'm glad others are finally starting to give him credit.

He didn't deserve the credit until this year, IMO. Thankfully he came into camp in the best shape of his career.
