Price's Stats

Was checking out goalie stats to see where Price was in terms of both GAA and SAVE% at this point in the season and was happy to see that he is currently 11th in both categories...

SAVE%
1) Anderson (CHI) - 0.940
2) Hiller (ANA) - 0.936
3) Thomas (BOS) - 0.932
4) Mason (COB) - 0.929
5) Luongo (VAN) - 0.928
6) Fernandez (BOS) - 0.926
7) Smith (TAM) - 0.924
8) Backstrom (MIN) - 0.923
9) Khabibulin (CHI) - 0.922
10) Clemmensen (NJD) - 0.921
T11) Price (MTL) - 0.919
T11) Roloson (EDM) - 0.919
13) Vokoun (FLA) - 0.918
T14) Johnson (WAS) - 0.916
T14) Halak (MTL) - 0.916
T14) Huet (CHI) - 0.916

GAA
1) Mason (CBJ) - 1.92
2) Hiller (ANA) - 2.07
3) Fernandez (BOS) - 2.09
T4) Thomas (BOS) - 2.15
T4) Anderson (CHI) - 2.15
6) Luongo (VAN) - 2.17
7) Backstrom (MIN) - 2.28
8) Clemmensen (NJD) - 2.30
9) Auld (OTT) - 2.34
10) Ersberg (LOS) - 2.38
T11) Price (MTL) - 2.39
T11) Huet (CHI) - 2.39
T13) Halak (MTL) - 2.44
T13) Khabibulin (CHI) - 2.44
T15) Smith (TAM) - 2.50
T15) Lundqvist (NYR) - 2.50

Quite respectable for a 21-year old goalie in my opinion and also nice to see that Halak is not too far behind. When I was looking at the lists, I noticed that a lot of the goalies in the top 10 didn't seem to be the regular starters for their teams, or at least weren't at the beginning of the season, so they actually hadn't started a good percentage of their team's games. I decided to look only at goalies that had started at least 19 games (about 60% if teams have played 32-33 games) and was surprised at the results:

SAVE%
1) Thomas (BOS) - 19 - 0.932
2) Luongo (VAN) - 19 - 0.928
3) Smith (TAM) - 24 - 0.924
4) Backstrom (MIN) - 28 - 0.923
5) Price (MTL) - 21 - 0.919
6) Auld (OTT) - 21 - 0.915
7) Ward (CAR) - 23 - 0.914
8) Lundqvist (NYR) - 30 - 0.913
T9) Giguere (ANA) - 21 - 0.913
T9) Miller (BUF) - 26 - 0.913
T9) Bryzgalov (ANA) - 26 - 0.913

GAA
1) Thomas (BOS) - 19 - 2.15
2) Luongo (VAN) - 19 - 2.17
3) Backstrom (MIN) - 28 - 2.28
4) Auld (OTT) - 21 - 2.34
5) Price (MON) - 21 - 2.39
T6) Smith (TAM) - 24 - 2.50
T6) Lundqvist (NYR) - 30 - 2.50
8) Ward (CAR) - 23 - 2.51
9) Miller (BUF) - 26 - 2.56
10) Nabokov (SAN) - 23 - 2.58

Its nice to see that Price is actually 5th in both categories among goalies that have started the majority (>60%) of their team's games. I know the cutoff I chose was a bit arbitrary, but I think its nice to see Price performing well on the stat sheet, with (Top 5-10 starter) or without (Top 10-15 overall) the cutoff I implemented.

He is something special. Like you said, he's only 21, that is insane. I would say on average most goalies only become starters at the age of 25, by then Price will have 5 years of experience. He IS the franchise and he has the head for it (not arrogant but humble). Even better when Gainey and Timmins have been drafting defencemen to play in front of him.

I think our defense had a very bad stretch at one point during the season and it made him look bad on some nights, but overall he's really a great goalie already.

The kid has only 3 regulation losses in the 21 games he's started this year. (13-3-5)

Isnt that INSANE?

As a London Knights fan I had the opportunity to see a lot of the other good young goalie on those lists. Steve Mason. The kid is the real deal. Technically exact and cool as a cucumber. Excellent puck handler too. He should be 20 right now I think. Parallel resume to Price's too: WJC goalie and tourney MVP

The surprising thing about Mase this year is that he is coming off knee and shoulder surgeries and has pretty much taken the lead job in Columbus. He beat us in a Shoot out too this year I believe

Love seeing the young talented guys step up

Should he get a DiPietro type contract ? I won't say 15 years but 8 could be nice.

Where's Fleury LMAO???... Nowhere among the best goalies yet isn't he leading the allstar ballot?

And Pens fans say that it is ridiculous that we vote in the Habs player that are on the ballot as they supposedly don't deserve it compared to other players..... hypocrites

Carey Price is the real deal. Only 3 regulation losses in 21 games. Roy better watch out for his win record(Brodeur this year and Price in 10-15 years)

Price is good, but i do believe T Thomas deserves a spot in the ASG way before M A Fleury and Price. T Thomas is a class act guy and has played well enough to be in the ASG.

No surprise here, Carey is a franchise player and has been one of the top goalie in the league this year. I'm surre Bob is looking to build the team around him and that's probably why he said he was looking for a solid D.

It's voted by the fans because it's for the fans.

Also, don't forget TT will be in the ASG, no doubt, but Price/Fleury will be the starter... which doesn't mean a thing really. Fans just get to vote for at least 1 entire line of people they want to see no matter what. The real all-stars will still make it!

Fleury has a .904 SV%, which ranks him tied for 27th, and a 3.06 GAA (35th). Only Turco, Toskala and MacDonald (Isles' replacement for ever-injured DiPietro) have worst stats among the NHL starters.

Plus, he pooped the series-winning goal in the SCF, something that should be enough to get him on the Wall of Shame.
