Long suspensions in GB

just came across this article from the first weekend of games in the british Elite league

http://www.eliteleague.co.uk/news/detail.php?id=6121

Quote:
Kozak has been suspended for a total of ten games for Sucker-Punching an opponent and Bringing the game into Disrepute with a further ten games suspended for a repeat offence, while Voth has received a twelve-game ban for Sucker-Punching an opponent and Slashing to the back of an opponents legs with a further twelve suspended again pending a repeat offence.
Brad Voth seems to be quite a goon... has over 300 pims in each of his 3 last years in Cardiff..

and here's a story from the victim, Randy Dagenais...

http://www.eliteleague.co.uk/news/detail.php?id=6119

Quote:
skated back to pick the puck up and just felt the slash across the back of my legs, the guys say it was a full baseball swing, then I got a punch on the back of the head before I could turn around, we then grappled and I just tried to get a good hold of him but by God he is so big and strong and it took me everything to hang in there

Voth is also the best power forward in the league and an excellent captain for Cardiff. He gets a very bad rap from the referees because of a number of bad incidents he's been involved with in the past, most of which he's been wrongly victimised for. This 12 games plus 12 suspended sentence is an absolute joke.

There's history to this. Last year Voth knocked out Steelers' Ashley Tait with a slightly high (Voth is 6ft5, Tait's 5ft11), but otherwise legal open-ice check for which he was suspended six games after a whole host of histrionics by Sheffield's PR juggernaut. They've been after him since. This weekend Dagenais had tried, and failed, to connect with a knee-on-knee hit previous to the incident in question on Devils' Jason Silverthorn. Voth came in (as captain and team policeman) to protect Silverthorn and got Dagenais' attention with a run-of-the-mill slash to the back of his legs, nothing more than you see every game. Dagenais turned to face him, Voth threw a big right and the fight broke out from there. It should be said that Voth had narrowly escaped an intentional high stick from Steelers goalie Jody Lehman a period before. Steelers have since thrown an absolute fit in the media and publicly crucified Voth, it's become a witch-hunt, and nearly every fan outside Sheffield has gone into uproar over the ban. Nobody's hurt, that story from Dagenais in the media's poppycock - but then, an awful lot of the stories in the Sheffield press have been like that for years. The ultimate irony is that for the last 35 seconds Sheffield's Andrew Sharp, a goon with zero hockey skill who had disclocated the shoulder of a Hull player the week before in an attack from behind without so much as a game penalty, was sent on for his first and only shift with the intent to rough up the first Cardiff player he could find.

In the midst of two other fights, Kozak jumped Marc Levers (who is anything but a tough guy) from behind and knocked his helmet off. He then proceeded to punch him to the ice where Marc hit his forehead hard, following up with a couple of blows to the back of the head to connect skull with ice a couple more times. On his way to the dressing room he kicked a spray from the large pool of blood left behind towards the Nottingham bench. And you're telling me <<this>> gets less than something that happens in every game? No wonder people are seriously questioning how much influence Sheffield, one of the so-called "big" clubs, have on the league.

Both suspensions have been appealed and will likely be halved or something like that.

Voth and Kozak both played this weekend pending the result of the appeals.

more suspensions...

http://www.eliteleague.co.uk/news/detail.php?id=6142

Quote:
Steve Thornton of the Belfast Giants has been suspended for a total of nine games.

Following review, his 2+2 penalty for High Sticking has been upgraded to a Match Penalty for Slashing. The slash in question was made to the head/neck area of the opposing player and as such this offence carries a suspension tariff of five games. Furthermore, the committee has imposed a further three game suspension for Reckless Use of the Stick.
Brad Cruickshank of the Basingstoke Bison has been suspended for a total of five games.

Curtiss Patrick of the Basingstoke Bison has been suspended for a total of three games.

Todd Griffith and Rob Rankin, both of the Newcastle Vipers, have been suspended for one game each.

I really don't have enough information about the british league, i know there's a lot of old north americans in the league, what's it like, is it a lot of fighting and tough play?

It's by far the most physical of the Euro leagues, but this year some teams have taken to signing guys purely to fight and do nothing else because they've run out of ideas (we're looking at you Hull and Newcastle). The level of roughness depends entirely on the teams playing. A Newcastle-Hull game could spark a mass brawl at the drop of a hat, a Manchester-Nottingham game will be (and has been) free-flowing, skillful hockey with honest, hard hits.

There's the valuable tough guys in the league such as Brad Voth, Brett Clouthier, Kyle Bruce and Carlyle Lewis who contribute both good play and points as well as fists to their teams, but then equally there's a Jason Kostadine, Nathan Gillies (*spit*) or an Andre Payette who are penalty magnets and contribute nothing whatsoever outside of hacks and slashes. There are also some wonderfully skilled players (David-Alexandre Beauregard, Adam Calder, Steve Thornton etc.) out there too.

Things got a lot more farcical over the last few weeks with Belfast Giants player coach Steve Thornton slashing Andre Payette to the head, which is ironic considering the last post on this subject.

This gave the powers that be in the Elite league a headache as they now risked losing one of their skilled players for in excess of 10 games given the suspensions that had already been handed out to Voth for a slash to the legs.

So in typical elite league style they cancelled their disciplinary meeting planned for the next week, leaving Thornton free to play for two weeks after the incident (scoring the winning goal against Coventry Blaze during this time). The league then did a dramatic u-turn by announcing Thornton's ban as 4 games for a slash to the head, they halved Kozak's ban and then, most bizarrely of all, made the devils appeal again against Voth's ban, which was eventually changed to 7 games for the slash to the legs (an offence that they had originally given 6 games for)! So now our league have set a precident where by a slash to the head is less serious than a slash to the legs! Absolutely crazy!

This debacle has lead to wide-spread criticism from many quarters, including the current GB and Coventry coach branding the league a "boy's club", with certain yeam owners having too much influence over the decisions.

He was going for the Cardiff player's head, missed and caught the linesman. He ended up repeatedly punching the referee in the middle of the fight immediately after.

Sheffield are better off without him. Sharp can't shoot, pass, skate, hit or do the one thing he was brought in to do, fight. I'm not exaggerating, he's that bad.
