That would be Tom Gilbert. Salo was done here, and the trade was to get his salary off the books. He was below average as a starter for the better part of a year and a half, and now his NHL career is done because he fell so far from grace. Nice to see him get on in Sweden.

Yeah, Tom Gilbert. From the talk that the boards have produced, it seems he's a mid-level defensive prospect with good offensive skills. I don't really know much more than that. I will say that I was surprised and pleased that Lowe got much more than a low round draft pick for Salo though.

Frankly at Salo's salary, and how crappy he'd been playing, I was surprised we got anything at all for him.

The biggest part of the trade IMO was that the Oilers got to dump Salo's salary to try and keep Nedved or to sign another top line center.

If I might interject, alzardnp it was to get rid of his remaining salary for that season because the following year (this one) was at team option, which they would have passed on anyways. It wouldn't have assisted them in resigning Nedved.

Tom Gilbert

I'm not familiar with Gilbert, but there is one thing I really liked about this trade - in addition to getting rid of Salo. That is, we traded with a team that has an above-average draft history. If the Avalanche scouting staff saw something they liked in Gilbert, that is a positive as far as I am concerned.

Thanks for pointing that out, slats432 (I can't believe you still remember)
So I guess no matter what, the Oilers win the trade because they were gonna lose Salo for nothing anyways. For some reason I always thought the option was a player option.

Gilbert spent the last 2 seasons with the University of Wisconsin.

First season: 7 goals, 13 assists, 20 points, 36 PIM in 39 games
Second season: 6 goals, 15 assists, 21 points, 36 PIM in 39 games

Bergeron47, I like the avatar but who's torso is Allison's head on? Wait, don't tell me...is it Semenov? A dollar to whoever guesses correctly (this, of course, being a virtual cyber-dollar with no monitary value).
